Between the medieval fantasy scape, suspenseful battle scenes and juicy plot full of drama, action and romance, Netflix’s fantasy series The Witcher is here to fill the Game of Thrones shaped hole in your heart.

The show stars former Superman and Stardust actor Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, a sullen monster-hunter who possesses magical ‘witcher’ properties.

Not liked by most, he joins a powerful sorceress (Yennefer of Vengerberg) and Princess Cirilla on a rip-roaring journey across the Continent. It quickly becomes apparent that the power-hungry humans they encounter are far crueller than the monsters they’re forced to slay.

The series also stars newcomers Anya Chalotra (Wanderlust) as Yennefer and Freya Allan (The War of the Worlds) as Princess Cirilla.

The Witcher is based off a book series written by Polish author, Andrzej Sapkowski and the show has already been compared to HBO’s hit program, Game of Thrones. However, The Witcher technically came first. Sapkowski began the series in 1993 before George R. R. Martin wrote the first book of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, Game of Thrones in 1996.

The characters are intriguing, the dialogue is witty and quick, and the eight-episode season is perfect for a holiday binge that will leave you hankering for season two.

The Witcher is also getting the Twitter seal of approval, with social media users raving about the show.
