What is the plot of The Life List?

The Life List follows Alex Rose, a woman whose mother has just recently passed away.

But her mother, Elizabeth, has left a rather unusual stipulation in her will. Alex must complete a "life list" of goals she wrote when she was a child.

As she reluctantly begins ticking off items — from teaching at a women's shelter to performing at an open mic night — Alex embarks on a journey that helps her rediscover herself and uncover family secrets along the way.

Set against the backdrop of New York City, the film is both an emotional coming-of-age story and a romance, as Alex finds herself growing closer to Brad, the young lawyer appointed as the executor of her mother's estate.

Initially, they bicker, but their relationship evolves as Alex works through her list and faces her grief.

As director Adam Brooks puts it, the story is about "moving through loss with tears in her eyes, a smile on her face, wit on her lips, as she learns to live again."

Who is in the cast of The Life List?

The film stars Sofia Carson — you may know her from the ever-so-popular Purple Hearts or the Netflix Christmas action movie, Carry-On — as our protagonist Alex.

Speaking about the film, Carson explained how relatable she found her character to be.

"Alex Rose is me, is you, is all of us," Carson told Tudum. "At times, alive but not living. She reconnects us to the dreamer we left behind, fearlessly holding her hand as she bravely marches through life."

Connie Britton (basically everyone's favourite mum) plays Elizabeth, Alex's mother who sets her daughter on this transformative path.

Kyle Allen plays Brad, the young lawyer who becomes Alex's unexpected ally and potential love interest as she completes her list. Sebastian de Souza portrays Garrett, Alex's colleague at the women's shelter and another romantic possibility. We love a love triangle moment.

The cast also includes Dario Ladani Sanchez and Federico Rodriguez as Alex's high-achieving brothers, along with José Zúñiga and Jordi Mollà in supporting roles.

When is The Life List coming out?

The good news is… it's soon. Very soon.

The Life List premieres on Netflix on March 28, 2025. Based on the book of the same name by Lori Nelson Spielman, this film is part of Netflix's partnership with producer Liza Chasin and her 3dot Productions.

It's written and directed by Adam Brooks, who previously brought us Definitely, Maybe, so you know we're in good hands with the romantic elements.

As Kyle Allen told Netflix about the film, "When I got the script, I cried, and that's always a good sign." He added that the movie is "going to talk about life in direct accordance with death, and going to walk people through it in a really beautiful and constructive way that leaves everyone happier and more fulfilled for what's happened."

Sounds like exactly the kind of movie we'll be texting our friends about immediately after watching.
