Ned Fulmer disappeared after his affair went viral. His 'blindsided' ex-wife is part of his comeback.

The cheating scandal that broke the internet in 2022 is back — and this time, it's almost as uncomfortable to watch.

Remember when YouTube star Ned Fulmer was caught publicly cheating on his wife at a concert, sending one corner of the internet into absolute meltdown? Well, three years later, Ned and his now-ex-wife Ariel have sat down — together — for an awkward podcast interview.

The former Try Guy — who built his entire brand around being obsessed with his wife — has returned to the internet with a new podcast called Rock Bottom with Ned Fulmer. And naturally, his debut episode features the woman whose heart he very publicly broke

Why did they do this? According to Ariel, it was mostly for their kids and their ability to move on from the online discourse.

"I didn't want them to Google their mum and have the scandal be the first thing that came up. I wanted there to be new work out there," Ariel said.

"I want to be able to say, 'You guys were there. This is what we did to move past it. We moved past it with integrity. We moved past it with trust. We moved past it together.'"

The internet, predictably, has thoughts.

What actually happened in 2022?

Back in 2022, the YouTube world imploded when Ned Fulmer — one quarter of the massively popular Try Guys — was exposed for cheating on his wife with a colleague.

The Try Guys were four former BuzzFeed employees (Keith Habersberger, Ned Fulmer, Zach Kornfeld and Eugene Lee Yang) who built an empire around, well, trying things. Their simple concept grew into a multi-million-dollar business with billions of views, their own TV shows, books, and multiple podcasts.

Things unravelled when Ned was spotted attending a Harry Styles concert at Madison Square Garden with Try Guys employee Alex Herring. Then Reddit and Twitter detectives got to work, uncovering alleged photos of Ned kissing Alex at a bar in New York City.

In response to the controversy, The Try Guys then confirmed Ned had "departed" the team following an "internal review." Ned then posted his own Instagram confession, admitting to a "consensual workplace relationship" and apologising to "the guys and the fans but most of all to Ariel."

So why was everyone so angry? The betrayal hit particularly hard because Ned's entire brand was being the "Wife Guy." His social media was filled with gushing posts about Ariel and their two kids. He literally called himself "@arielmfulmer's husband" in his Instagram bio. The couple had even launched their own podcast and cookbook together.

For fans who'd invested in their seemingly perfect relationship, the cheating felt like a personal betrayal.

Not to mention the blatant lack of ethics around starting an affair with an employee — a power dynamic that makes the whole situation even more problematic.

The recent podcast.

After three years of silence, Ned returned to the internet this week with Rock Bottom With Ned Fulmer, a podcast about "surviving rock bottom." His debut guest? Ariel herself.

"We really haven't been [together] at all, these last three years," Ned admitted, with the pair confirming that they have since split. However, they said they maintain a friendship for their children's sake.

When asked if she's forgiven Ned, Ariel's response was brutal and rightfully so.

"The answer is no. Absolutely not. How can you forgive somebody for lying to you, for cheating on you? No, fuck no," she said.

"Forgiveness isn't the goal at this point... the fact I can be around you and still have a good time and enjoy spending time with you and spending time with my kids, like I think that's a win."

In perhaps the most devastating revelation, Ariel discovered the affair through fan speculation online. She was sent a photo of Ned and Alex kissing but initially thought it was Ned's sister.

Ned admitted feeling "relieved" when Ariel found out because he no longer had to keep the secret.

Looking back, Ariel described their relationship as living in a "fantasy."

"I trusted you so completely... We were just kids and it's like, it really was a fantasy, and I think, how could you do that to me? Like, who are you?" she said.

In response, Ned spoke about why he cheated in the first place. And it's… well, interesting.

"The dream started to break apart for me and rather than being able to talk about it or confront those feelings, I was too afraid to say how I was actually feeling and I chose to deal with the feelings I was experiencing that were really self-destructive and hurtful to you," Ned said.

At one point during the podcast, Ned described feeling "pigeon-holed" as the "Wife Guy" in the Try Guys.

"I guess I noticed that in my own work. It's like the things that consistently drew people in were adorable family posts or talking about my wife, and then producers lean into that and like craft situations for me and over time it felt super pigeon-holed and just had to fulfil this one quadrant in a foursome to be this kind of caricature," he shared.

Unsurprisingly, the podcast has reignited fury online. Many are questioning why Ned thought this was a good idea, while others are rallying around Ariel, praising her honesty and strength.

The consensus seems clear: Ariel deserves better, and Ned's attempt at a comeback feels tone-deaf at best.

"I'm just glad to have confirmation that they're no longer together," one user commented on Ned's Instagram.

"Not him acting like he's not the problem, acting like a therapist??????" another wrote.

As for what's next? Ariel is focusing on starting a pottery business (good for her), while Ned plans to continue his podcast featuring other people's rock-bottom stories.

Whether anyone actually wants to hear from the disgraced "Wife Guy" remains to be seen.
