With two little words, Natalie Portman threw the most cunning jab of the 2018 Golden Globes.

The 75th Golden Globes is unlike any we have ever seen.

Hollywood elite walked the red carpet dressed entirely in black, unified by two words that would have been unimaginable just 12 months ago: Times up.

Following what has been termed ‘The Reckoning’, with allegations of sexual misconduct against Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Woody Allen, Morgan Spurlock, Dustin Hoffman, along with dozens more, Hollywood is fighting back.

Following an impassioned speech by Oprah Winfrey, Natalie Portman was invited to the stage to announce the nominees for Best Director, alongside director Ron Howard.

Howard attempted to steer the subject back to awards, before Portman said, with a polite, half-smile, “And here are the all-male nominees”.

A gasp arose from the audience, with one voice exclaiming “Woah”. A knowing chuckle came from Howard, who looked down at his feet. Seconds later, laughter began to emerge from the crowd.

The camera then quickly flashed to director Guillermo del Toro, who looked somewhat shocked by the two words Portman added to her introduction.

Twitter reacted immediately.

“It took serious guts,” one user wrote, with another posting, “Natalie Portman just did more with two words than any male winner has done with their entire acceptance speech tonight.”

Many are describing the moment as “iconic”.

In 75 years, just one woman has won the award for Best Director.

One.

And that was Barbra Streisand, more than 25 years ago.

Of the 250 highest-grossing films in 2016, just seven per cent of them were directed by women.

Portman, on her way to the Golden Globes, uploaded her first Instagram story alongside America Ferrera.

They both reiterated the words that will unequivocally go down in history.

“Times up.”
