Nancy Meyers is here to save the rom-com (and thank god).

We're suffering through a rom-com scarcity crisis.

This is not a hot take. It's a widely documented issue of sorts, with vocal outcry from esteemed industry insiders such as Reese Witherspoon (and also me).

No one is getting mail, no one is sleepless in Seattle, no one is hooking up with some guy while their crush is in a coma (if you do not understand that reference, please go watch While You Were Sleeping).

Those two beautiful boys in the Ice Hockey show — also known as Heated Rivalryhave been just about the only thing to bring us a sense of hope, whimsy, and romance in recent times. And if anyone is trying desperately to revive the romantic comedy, it's the geniuses working in TV right now.

But television is simply not film.

And when it comes to movies, we're seeing a whole lot of Hallmark level content (fine! has a place!) and a real lack of those mid-budget A-list romantic comedies of yesteryear.

Think: When Harry Met Sally, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, Notting Hill, 27 Dresses and so many more. The likes of which are nowhere to be seen in 2026.

But Nancy Meyers is here to save the day: one deliciously decorated room at a time. And the plot of her new rom-com reads like a combination of The Holiday and The Intern.

Following years of back-and-forth negotiations, it seems Meyers' new romantic comedy has finally got legs (and a kick-ass cast) with a slated release for December 25, 2027.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms the film has found its home in Warner Bros, with a cast including Penélope Cruz, Kieran Culkin, Jude Law, Emma Mackey and Owen Wilson.

When Meyers was originally creating a new project for Netflix in 2023, the working title or potential code-name for the film was Project Paramount. It's believed that, with a new home and new cast of actors, Meyers is still working on this same project.

Reports claim it's centred on a young writer-director who falls in love with a producer.

"The pair make several successful films before breaking up, both romantically and professionally," THR says.

"They are forced back together when a new, great project arises, and they find themselves having to deal with high-stakes and volatile stars. It was semi-autobiographical."

Now, the rumoured plot does not appear to directly involve Christmasy things — but it is being released on December 25. And if your name is Nancy Meyers, and you're releasing a rom-com at Christmas, I expect to see some fairy lights and at least one singular pine tree.

While there's still plenty to come on this project, the vibe its giving right now is classic Meyers: an ensemble cast, buzzy plotline, cosy atmosphere, and budding romance filled with tension.

It's going to be perfect. And I can't wait!
