It’s a universally acknowledged truth that your life changes when you have a child.
In both the big and small ways, your priorities change and a lot of the things that were once important to you, simply no longer are. Your wants and your needs — or your “wish list” if you like — change dramatically once you become a mother.
Not only that, your desire to leave a financial legacy, to leave behind a financially secure future for your children and your family becomes something you become crystal clear about. All parents want to give their children a great start in life, perhaps one that we ourselves were never given. Whether it be through our own careful superannuation choice or specific financial planning, these things suddenly become more important to us than we ever could have ever imagined.
Just as an FYI, this post is sponsored by HOSTPLUS Super. But all opinions expressed by the author are 100% authentic and written in their own words.
We polled our Facebook readers and asked them what they were surprised to find had changed on their own ‘life wish list’ after they had children.
Here are our top six responses:
1. A people mover.
A car that screams practical isn’t exactly what any twenty something thinks they will one day covet. In fact, the term, “7-seater” isn’t exactly on top of anyone’s list before his or her children come along. A lot of parents were still fairly confident they’d be getting around in their hatchback, even after they had kids. Fast-forward to 10 years later, 3 kids, multiple car seats and a double pram, and a minivan suddenly becomes very appealing to a lot of people.
