After her grocery shop, this mum wanted to buy a bottle of wine to go with dinner. But she wasn’t allowed.
Is it fair enough that this mum was barred from a bottle shop because her daughter was with her?
Perth Now report that last Wednesday Candice Lewis, a mum from Belmont, Perth, wanted to purchase a couple of bottles of wine after doing her grocery shopping.
However, when she tried to enter the Belmont Forum’s Liquorland, a security guard for the bottle shop refused her entry. Because her daughter was under 18-years-old (her daughter, Alexia, is 18-months-old).
Candice told Perth Now, “I thought maybe a cut-off for a 12-year-old or something would be fair but Alecia is 18 months – what is she going to steal?”
A spokesperson for the Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor said that under the Act, anyone under 18-years-old were allowed on premises selling alcohol as long as they were accompanied by a parent or guardian. The only change to this, is if the particular licence says otherwise.
For this particular store this is the case. An additional restriction on children under 18-years-old entering the store (even with an adult) has been in place since 23 June. The shop stated that it has signs which display the restriction.
Candice said, “I didn’t bother getting the wine. You couldn’t leave [my 18-month-old toddler] in the car or outside the store.”
