Q. What do you do when your teen stops wanting to cuddle you as much?
A. Knit a life-size replica of course.
That’s what Amsterdam mum, Marieke Voorsluijs, did.
We could conjecture philosophically for hours about the parent child dyad, about letting go, growing up and the issues and emotions that stem from parent child separation. But we won't because the kid is bigger than us and is KNITTED.
Already an expert knitter with a reputation for creating the "unknittable", we'll let Voorsluijs explain her project in her own words. The mum of two told the blog boredpanda:
My son is reaching puberty. We used to cuddle all the time, but those days are becoming scarce. Now he rather hangs with friends, plays with his phone and listens to his ipod. Exactly according to nature’s plan. I am a good mother, so of course I accept this and I am happy he is a healthy kid.
We laugh a lot about the stretching gap between his needs and mine. Him needing more of his own space and my covert needs to keep on smothering him with maternal love. I am a textiles designer and he often helps me and has great creative ideas. So we started to fantasize how we could visualize this puberty gap. So I suggested to make a cuddly version of him!
Voorsluijs two sons helped her with the project and her third, knitted, more woolly son comes complete with a knitted cap, knitted hands with nails and a knitted iPod.
Word on the knitted street is he speaks in complete sentences, asks his mother how her day went and cleans his room without being asked.
Now, that's taking the whole knit-me-a-kid-for-cuddles thing way too far.
