Heather Clark tragically lost her seven-month-old son, Luka, after leaving him with a trusted babysitter in June 2013.
In a child abuse case still under criminal investigation, the Californian baby was allegedly killed by the babysitter’s boyfriend.
But a devastated Ms Clark decided to donate her young son’s organs, saving three other lives – including that of four-year-old Arizona girl, Jordan Drake, who was born with a congenital heart defect.
Over the weekend, almost three years on, she was able to hear the sound of her son’s heart beating again, in Jordan’s chest.
Watch the beautiful moment here:
According to Arizona’s Fox 10 News, Ms Clark said she decided to donate Luka’s organs to save another family from the pain she experienced.
“There is another family out there, somewhere, you know who’s feeling something of what I’m feeling, somewhat, and I have the chance to make them not go through what I’m about to go through,” Ms Clark said.
“The only thing I can think of is, I can’t save my own son so why not save someone else’s child because I can’t do anything with him.”
Ms Clark described her late son as outgoing and “a little ham”.
“If there was a camera in front of him he was either smiling or sticking his tongue out,” she said.
Jordan’s mother, Esther Gonzalez, said she was amazed by Ms Clark’s selflessness.
“It’s hard to describe… that she would be so selfless to be able to think of another family while she’s going through her grief,” Ms Gonzalez said.
“We’re family now, we’re friends now, our families are families, we’ve brought our families together.”
Ms Clark was also given a teddy bear with an audio recording of her son’s heartbeat, so she can hear it whenever she wants to.
The two mothers, whose lives are now inextricably linked, have vowed to stay in touch.
