The easiest weekend escape from Sydney? This little wine region just over three hours away.

There's something about a regional town in winter that just feels right. So when I needed a quick escape, I knew exactly where to head.

My sister and I booked a short trip to Mudgee — it'd been ages (note: a slight exaggeration here) since our last proper girls' trip and this little wine region felt like the perfect choice.

Full disclosure: we've been to Mudgee before. A few times, actually. My sister even got engaged there.

Mamamia.

But that's the bonus — we've already sussed out where to eat, drink and stay, so you don't have to. Consider this your cheat sheet from two Sydney girls who've done the groundwork.

So, here are my top recommendations. You'll want to take notes.

Day 1

The best thing about Mudgee? How close it is to Sydney — just over a three-and-a-half-hour drive. We made a quick stop in the Blue Mountains for a bite, then cruised through rolling countryside into town.

We arrived in the late afternoon and checked into the Harvest Studios at The Clairfield Hotel.

Now, when I say this is the place to stay, I mean it. The interiors here are my new hyper-fixation.

The studios have a modern, minimal design with natural tones and plenty of space. Ours came with a kitchenette, a king-size bed and a cosy window seat. The accommodation felt genuinely luxe, with attention to detail that was truly on another level.

From the moment we arrived, the staff were welcoming and went out of their way to make sure we were booked into Gigi's, their on-site restaurant, and Jila Wellness, their wellness centre. Both were highlights of the trip — more on that later.

The property also boasts a well-equipped gym and a beautiful outdoor pool, which would be divine in the warmer months. The location is quiet but just a ten-minute walk to the town centre, making it easy to get around.

That evening we went straight to Gigi's for dinner. The menu focuses on local seasonal ingredients with dishes that are well executed without any fuss.

We shared a few plates and if you're heading there soon, I'd highly recommend the pumpkin and feta ravioli with lamb shank ragu and rosemary crumb (the pasta was made from scratch that morning) with a side of duck fat potatoes and honey-roasted parsnips.

Now for dessert. You must order the Gigi's tiramisu cheesecake and the bombolone. Need I say more?

Day 2

The next morning we started at Jila Wellness, which is located on-site at the hotel. If you're planning a girls' bachelorette weekend or a full day of wineries, booking Jila beforehand (or as a recovery) is a must. It's quiet, private and designed to help you properly unwind — without having to leave the property.

We were welcomed with warm detox tea, then settled into the infrared sauna (there's also a magnesium float if that's more your vibe), which was exactly what we needed to shake off the city pace.

In town for lunch, we went to Alby & Esthers. It's a small café tucked away in a little courtyard, serving fresh, simple dishes with plenty of vegetarian options. It totally hit the mark. The toastie and soup combo was exactly what we needed on a cold winter's day, and I'm calling it: this is the best coffee in town.

Afterwards, we drove out to Lowe Family Wine Co, about 10 minutes from town.

This family-run winery has such a relaxed, welcoming vibe. My sister and I have been before and done the full tasting, so this time we kept it low-key with an afternoon drink in the sun.

There's plenty of outdoor seating, delish cheeseboards and views that make you want to stay all afternoon. It's one of those places that just always delivers — can't recommend it enough.

For dinner we hit the local pub — a rite of passage in any regional town. But if you're after something a bit fancier, Lowe's Zin House offers a set menu that focuses on local produce only. A heads-up: you'll need to book in advance.

Day 3

On the final morning, we returned to Gigi's. The breakfast menu was simple but offered a good balance of hearty and fresh options. I went for a coffee and porridge, which felt perfect on a chilly morning.

Driving home to Sydney, I couldn't help but reflect on how regional towns in winter hit differently.

The slower pace, the cold air, the excuse to linger over a glass of wine or stay curled up somewhere cosy — it's all part of the charm.

If you're craving a break, you won't find a better one.
