'As an ex-corporate girlie, these are the 5 commute-friendly shoes I swear by.'

As someone who worked in corporate for years, I've spent more mornings than I'd like to admit playing the dreaded shoe shuffle — starting my commute in beat-up sneakers only to frantically swap into stiff oxfords or blisters-waiting-to-happen heels under my desk.

It's a specialised kind of stress, trying to find that perfect pair of shoes that survives a 20-minute walk and a crowded train without making you look like you're heading to a workout.

So over the years (and after many, many blisters) I have nailed down the holy grail of commute-friendly office footwear, and it turns out, you don't have to sacrifice your arches for your aesthetic.

Loafers.

For me, a good loafer is the ultimate power shoe that secretly feels like a slipper. The key I've found is to hunt for a leather or suede, or materials that will soften with wear — you want them to be malleable enough to bend with your foot rather than fighting it with every step.

I've also found that a slightly chunky sole provides that much-needed shock absorption on concrete sidewalks but still looks incredibly sharp with tailored trousers.

Ballet flats.

Ballet flats are a classic I've returned to, but only now that they've been re-imagined with actual support. To avoid that "walking on cardboard" ache by noon, I prioritise styles with a plush, padded footbed.

Personally, I love a rounded or square toe — it adds a level of sophistication that makes the flat feel chic, without pinching your toes.

When I actually need some height, the kitten heel is my absolute best friend because it keeps my foot at a natural angle without the fatigue you get from a higher heel.

I stick to a height between one and two inches and always look for a closed-toe or a secure ankle strap to keep my foot from sliding around mid-commute.

That extra stability makes them surprisingly manageable for city blocks while still feeling perfectly posh for a boardroom.

Smart sneakers.

If your office is not as professional, you may be able to get away with a smart sneaker.

The smart sneaker is all about minimalism — I'm talking monochromatic tones without the bulky tech of a typical runner. I always opt for a slim profile and keep them scrupulously clean to make sure they pair seamlessly with my midi skirts or slacks.

The built-in arch support and rubber outsoles make these the undisputed champions of my long-distance commute days.

I love that Mary Janes offer the charm of a ballet flat but with a bit more locked-in security that stops my foot from lifting out of the shoe while I'm speed-walking to catch a train.

I look for straps with adjustable buckles or hidden elastic to accommodate the inevitable afternoon swelling. They feel secure and sturdy, making them my go-to for navigating subway stairs and busy platforms without a second thought.
