'Yes, the ultimate safari experience exists in Australia, and it's just one hour from Adelaide.'

Sometimes you go on an overseas holiday and come home feeling like you need… another holiday. But the beauty of travelling in Australia is that unforgettable experiences are often closer than you think.

Our recent stay at Monarto Safari Resort in South Australia was exactly that — unique, memorable and surprisingly easy to reach. Just over an hour's drive from Adelaide, we found ourselves in the heart of the mallee plains, stepping into a safari experience.

Any post-flight crankiness vanished the moment little faces were pressed against the windows, awestruck by the wildlife. It was the kind of view that makes you pause mid–snack handout and simply take it all in.

Once we'd soaked in those first breathtaking views, we settled in and got ready to make the most of our two days at the resort.

Where we slept.

We stayed two nights in a Waterhole two–bedroom suite that ticked all the boxes — spacious, comfortable and stocked with everything we needed for our little safari staycation.

But the real highlight? The view. From our room we could spot ostriches, giraffes and zebras roaming the plains, like our own private wildlife show.

That first morning set the tone. No whining over breakfast or squabbles about the TV — just a sky painted in orange and pink from the sunrise, lions roaring in the distance and two little kids standing barefoot on the balcony in absolute awe.

In 2026, the second phase of the Resort will open — a luxury safari lodge — which includes a central lodge that will feature plunge pools, lounge and dining areas, surrounded by 20 luxury safari tents that all overlook their own waterhole for even closer encounters with wildlife.

And you can bet we'll be back to see it for ourselves. Monarto Safari Resort is perfect for a family getaway, but honestly, it's just as magical for couples or friends after a truly unique experience.

Activities for the kids.

The kids were counting down to the Dawn Wildlife Safari — a tour that's exclusive to resort guests. Rugged up in their little jackets, still half-asleep but buzzing with excitement, they piled into the vehicle and we set off across the plains.

As the sun came up, the whole landscape turned gold and animals started to appear around us. At one point, an ostrich bolted after a giraffe like a real-life cartoon unfolding right in front of us. The kids were squealing, we were cracking up — it was the kind of moment you'll never get at a regular zoo with fences in the way.

And the guides made it even better. Their love for the animals was obvious, and the way they told stories and dropped fun facts kept all of us — kids and adults — completely hooked.

But don't worry, if the thought of a 6am wake-up on a holiday makes you shudder, you can always do the Sunset Wildlife Safari. Same animals, same wow factor — without losing your sleep-in.

Something for the adults.

And then, of course, there was the Marula Day Spa — definitely deserving of its own moment. While the kids were busy living their best lives in the pool, I snuck away for some much-needed grown-up time (a rare holiday miracle).

The afternoon was spent drifting between the sauna, vitality pool and a daring cold plunge at the Soak House, capped off with a relaxing massage. All the while, I could gaze out across the plains, with animals quietly roaming in the distance.

It was serene, restorative and worlds away from my usual "me time" at home — which, let's be honest, usually involves scrolling on my phone while hiding in the bathroom.

Everything we ate.

The fun didn't stop with the animals.

The buffet breakfast quickly became a daily highlight for the kids, mostly thanks to the pancake machine — which was so irresistible, I even managed to use it as a bedtime bargaining tool. Getting them back to plain toast and cereal once we were home? Not so easy.

Kutjera Restaurant & Bar was a highlight, overlooking the Wild Africa waterhole. Here, you can watch the animals go by while enjoying contemporary Australian dishes made with the best South Australian produce.

The gin-flamed prawns were unforgettable, the braised lamb shoulder and barramundi practically melted in your mouth and the kids had their own menu packed with options they loved.

The final verdict.

Monarto Safari Resort is one of those rare places that feels both otherworldly and effortless. From the moment we arrived, the kids were wide-eyed with wonder, collecting memories I know will stay with them forever.

For us parents, it was the rare gift of truly switching off — adventure one moment, real downtime the next. It's the kind of holiday that feels once-in-a-lifetime, yet close enough to become a family tradition.
