Dear Millennials, it's time to bury another one of our beloved staples.

First it was our skinny jeans, then we were mocked for our side parts and, lest we forget the farcical fall-out from the sock debate.

Now, they're coming for our beloved, practical, daily saviour: our crossbody bags.

Nicole Adolphe, Head of Style at The Iconic, confirmed it, saying, "Crossbody's been done".

Yes, she used the word DONE…

On a recent episode of Nothing To Wear with Leigh Campbell, Nicole and Leigh were discussing 'Everything You'll Be Wearing in 2025'.

Leigh declared, "We're going to see the return of the shoulder bag."

To which The Iconic's Nicole responded, "We want to show off our outfit. We don't want to hide it with a strap."

I was shook.

All I own are crossbody bags. They are so practical. You forget you are wearing a bag when you glide out the door with a crossbody strapped across your torso.

And just like when I felt the shock waves of Gen Z's sock rules, this wasn't the first time I'd heard about the bag rumours. Whispers were mounting around the Mamamia office.

I turned to the Gen Z Counsel at work to verify the claim…

Gen Z's respond to the rumour.

"Crossbody bags are very Millennial coded — Gen Z's are all about an under the shoulder bag, big or small," said Issy.

Belle added, "It's not so much that the cross bodybag is bad at all, it's more so you can spot a Millennial out in the crowd with it. It's a Millennial identifier."

"Gen Z are notoriously shoulder bag girlies," said Kelsey.

"I hate bags, If I can go without I will," Liv responded cryptically.

But where do you put THINGS Liv?!

My fellow Millennial colleagues came out swinging in defence.

Millennials clap back.

"Ever gone to a music festival with a goddamn clutch?! This is just getting silly," said Pip.

Fran added, "Gen Z haven't lived through enough to understand all the benefits of a crossbody bag. Like, why does it have to be one or the other with Gen Z? There is a time and a place for all types of bags... so many rules."

"My mild scoliosis can't deal with this fashion revelation," Taylah said.

Nat explained, "They must all have nice shoulders where bags don't fall off and not much stuff to carry. Jealous. I will NEVER abandon the crossbody bag."

"I don't remember hating on the Boomer's handbags — like just live your life," Bel said.

As an elder Millennial, I'm feeling torn.

I recall the same feeling when I was at the first stage of sock-confusion. But knowing the trend-tragic I am, and how I no longer own ankle socks or sockettes, I think it's time to get ahead of it.

Bag trend forecast for 2025.

Get ready to see the resurgence of brown and suede this year.

In terms of shape, as seen on the likes of Bella Hadid, it's all about slouchy, leather tote bags. Think oversized, over-stuffed and even woven textures like we saw in Bottega Veneta's spring/summer collection for 2024.

Nostalgically, we are going to see the return of charm accessories to personalise your look. Also, Hobo bags are about to be everywhere.
