'I'll be sitting front row in the cinema for Miles Teller's possum musical.'

Everybody says they want to see more 'original ideas' in the art world, that they're tired of the never-ending barrage of sequels and reboots currently in the works. But then they look at you like you're deranged when you tell them you're looking forward to Miles Teller's possum musical.

Like, hello? To quote Martin Scorcese, "that's cinema".

The actor — who famously stars in big blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick and Oscar-nominated films like Whiplash — has signed on to a new project. Is everyone excited? Well, I certainly am because this fever dream of a plot is so outlandish it just might work.

Possum Song is described as a 'fantastical' new film, directed by Sing Sing Oscar nominee Greg Kwedar, written by Isaac Adamson, and starring the one and only, Miles Teller.

Watch Miles Teller talk about his wife, Keleigh. Article continues below.

Eddie (Teller) is an overconfident Nashville star who is hiding a dark secret: he stole the song for his debut album. Shock! Horror! Intrigue?

With a new wife and a baby on the way, Eddie needs to capture some of the original magic of his music for a follow-up album. Just as things seem hopeless, he discovers a musical genius in the form of a magical possum with whom he strikes a dangerous bargain.

The deal is described as 'Faustian' in nature, so… I guess he's going to trade his soul for the chance to write music only a possum could produce. But who will play the possum? I have grand visions of Hugh Jackman in a giant costume, I'll tell you that much.

Now feels like a good time to point out that American possums are weird, hellish creatures and simply do not hold a candle to the Australian possum: a genetic marsupial marvel with cute bug eyes and cosy auras. No, the American possum is a sassy little freak no one would want to encounter. Much less make soul-bearing deals with.

I know this one looks fine, but you'll often find them hissing at strangers:

"This is a one-of-a-kind film," said Ben Browning, FilmNation Entertainment's President of Motion Pictures.

And well, yes! It is.

"Greg's vision, Isaac's hilarious script and the magnetic performance of Miles Teller will create the kind of cinematic ride that audiences are craving — with showstopping music, visceral shocks, possums, humour and emotion."

Girl, you don't have to tell me twice! I'll be there in the front row of the cinema on opening day. Well, I might take a seat in the back aisles to truly absorb all the high-octane action of Possum Song. I hope they release this thing in IMAX.

The film is currently being pre-sold for the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, which would see it premiering in May followed by a later release in cinemas next year.
