Michael Schumacher’s wife wasn’t sure if she was going to see her husband awake again. Then he woke up.
A few days before the skiing accident that left him in an induced coma, Schumacher, 45, said that he and his wife of 19 years had never had a serious fight in all their married life together.
"It's because we share the same values," he commented. "During all the time I was racing she was my guardian angel."
Today, it was announced Schumacher is no longer in a coma and has been discharged from the French hospital in Grenoble where he has been treated since December.
Michael Schumacher and his wife Corinna grew up in the same region of West Germany. Theirs is a fateful story - meeting one night at a party in 1991 only to fall in love soon after.
The pair have two children, Gina Marie, 16, and Mick, 14, who was skiing with his father when Schumacher fell and hit his head on a rock on 29 December 2013.
Corinna spent the last 6 months since the accident, by his bedside, even spending her birthday in March this year, cradled beside her husband.
There is hope for the family once more.
Schumacher transferred this morning to the University Hospital Lausanne in Switzerland. The facility is about 32 kilometres from the home of the seven-time F1 champion.
His manager, Sabine Kehm, has released a statement saying: "His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months."
The family have asked for privacy and respect from the public during his recovery period.
