The 2025 Met Gala is happening, and this theme has been a long time coming.

The fashion world's most anticipated event, the Met Gala, is taking on a bold new direction in 2025, marking a historic moment with its exhibition "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style".

Held on May 5 in New York City, this will be the first Met Gala in over two decades to focus exclusively on menswear, specifically celebrating Black style and dandyism.

To celebrate the Costume Institute's exhibition, the dress code for the gala will be 'Tailored for You'.

The 2025 Met Gala theme draws profound inspiration from Monica L. Miller's influential 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.

This carefully curated exhibition will present a comprehensive exploration of Black dandyism, tracing its evolution from its emergence in 18th-century Enlightenment Europe through to its contemporary expressions in global fashion capitals.

This exhibition marks a pivotal moment as the first Met Gala focused on menswear since 2003. It represents a significant step forward in addressing previous criticisms about the lack of Black representation at the Costume Institute.

The theme celebrates the power of style as a democratic tool for rejecting stereotypes and accessing new possibilities.

So, what is Black dandyism?

"Historically, the term Dandy was used to describe someone, often a man, who was extremely devoted to aesthetics and approached it as a lifestyle," author Monica L. Miller told The Met YouTube Channel.

"It was imposed on black men in Europe during the 1700s as the Atlantic slave trade created a trend in fashionably dressed or 'dandified' servants. Free and enslaved black people came to understand the power of clothing and style and signalling hierarchies of race class and gender.

"Over time, dandyism gave black men and women an opportunity to use clothing, gesture, irony, and wit, to transform their identities and imagine new ways of embodying political and social responsibilities.

"The exhibition explores how the history of black dandyism illustrates the transformation from being enslaved and stylised as 'luxury items'…to autonomous self-fashioning individuals."

The exhibition promises to be transformative, examining how clothing and style have been instrumental in shaping Black identities within the Atlantic diaspora.
