Seven big trends we now want to try, thanks to the celebrities at the Met Gala.

There’s just one word to sum up this year’s Met Gala red carpet: wow.

There were sparkles and sequins, capes and culottes, feathers and fringing, leotards, sky-high updos and plenty of skin flashing — and that was just the first four arrivals.

While we’re unlikely to be able to afford the exact outfits we’ve been drooling over all day (looking at you, Nicole Kidman), there was plenty of Met Gala inspiration to influence our future style choices.

We’ve rounded up the seven trends we can’t wait to try from today… and the four we’ll kindly give a miss.

Trends we want to try

1. Dark lips

Forget the classic bombshell red — we’ll be investing in a dark lippy this winter. Seen on Taylor Swift, Hailee Steinfeld and Poppy Delevingne, it’s a versatile shade that can be worn on all skin tones for a striking look.

2. Tulle.

Can you remember the last time you wore tulle? Too long ago, is the likely answer — and if it reminds you of childhood ballet costumes, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Lorde and Kate Hudson reminded us pretty the fabric can be - and well, Solange just proved tulle can be worked into any outfit.

3. Chunky boots.

No need to torture your ankles by hobbling about in fancy stilettos — just make like Selena Gomez, Jennifer Connelly and Michelle Williams and get out your biggest, baddest, chunkiest boots for your next big event.

4. Centre part.

With so much sparkle going on down below, many attendees opted for simple hairstyles — think sleek, straight hair and centre parts. And frankly, you can count us in for any hairstyle that doesn't require contorting our arms and wrangling curling irons.

5. Glow in the dark clothes.

We haven't quite worked out exactly how to do this, but can you imagine how useful Claire Danes' stunning dress would be for seeing where the keyhole is when you come home in the dark? Yes, we're practical like that.

 6. Sparkles. Sparkles everywhere.

With winter coming, it can be tempting to retreat into a wardrobe of dark colours. But not us. Inspired by the sea of sequins and metallics (and Kanye West!) we'll be flying the sparkly flag loud and proud.

7. Crafty alterations.

Karlie Kloss proves you don't always need to go out and purchase a new outfit for every event - you can just make do and mend what you've already got. Or in this case, cut. It's a great tip for brides tossing up about having two separate dresses for the reception and ceremony - problem solved.

...And the four we won't be trying.

1. Undewear-less.

Madonna's ensemble manages to bare both her bum and breasts. It's an impressive feat, but one we won't be attempting to recreate. At least not in the office.

2. Pedal pushers.

The '90s may be fashionable again, but we're arguing that this style of trousers wasn't even stylish the first time 'round.

3. Rubber.

Sorry, Beyonce - you look gorgeous but we just don't think this one will quite catch on. It would be helpful in food spillage situations, though.

4. Cut out.

It's certainly statement-making but we feel cold just looking at Kendall's  poor hips. Plus, our abs ain't ready for that jelly.
