'The $23 peel-off tint I use when I can't get a brow appointment.'

Mamamia's Tried and Tested series is your review of the latest to hit our desks in beauty, health and wellbeing. You won't find any #sponsored content here, just honest, relatable and independent advice. This week, Mamamia's Beauty Editor trials Maybelline Tattoo Brow Gel Tint.

In case you've just woken up, it's Christmas in, like, a week — and it's suddenly become impossible to book a beauty appointment of precisely any nature because everyone's rushing to do the same thing.

Hair! Nails! Facials! Brows!

In fact, for reasons precisely unknown (genes), the latter is something I have to stay on top of every three weeks or so in order for me to be able to, y'know… see.

It's true! My brows are wild. Perpetually unkempt. Wants to attach itself to my hairline.

Watch: Speaking of brows, let's revisit Kelly McCarren and Leigh Campbell talking about brow blindness on You Beauty. Post continues below.

For this reason, I've been looking for an affordable, easy way to avoid trying to snag a Christmas brow appointment — and you guys, I think I've found it.

It's called Maybelline Tattoo Brow Peel Off Eyebrow Tint and you can currently grab it for $23 from Chemist Warehouse. And look, I don't want to jump the gun, but it might just be the Holy Grail brow product I've been searching for since… forever.

What is Maybelline Tattoo Brow Peel Off Eyebrow Tint?

Maybelline Tattoo Brow Peel Off Eyebrow Tint is a (you guessed it!) at-home semi-permanent peel-off gel tint that promises to leave your brows looking naturally tinted and filled for up to three days. Available in six different shades, it's supposed to work within minutes and gradually and evenly fade over time.

You're basically supposed to apply the tint to your brows, leave it for 20 minutes, peel it off and… voila! Perfectly full, natural-looking brows.

But does it actually work?

How to use peel-off tints for fuller brows.

If tints make you nervy, I GET IT. Me too. They're scary things and you always, always feel like you're going to come out the other end looking like Bert from Sesame Street. I also decided to try this on the eve of my work Christmas party so I was extra cautious with going too hard.

The formula comes in a little tube with a small brush used to apply it across your brow hairs. You're meant to first clean your eyebrows and apply a thick layer of the product to your desired brow shape. But you guys, it looked HECTIC and I think I applied a little less than what you were supposed to. The brush is also not the most precise brush getting around, so I was a little terrified I'd stain my skin.

You're then meant to leave the product to set for at least 20 minutes (I just went and watched some TV). For super long wear, you can leave it on for up to two hours, but I got too scared so just stuck with 20 minutes (even this felt alarmingly long).

When the time was up, I attempted to peel the tint off my brows but because I'd only really applied a thin layer, it started coming off in little pieces (which looked alarmingly like hair tbh).

My mum also did her brows but applied a thicker layer and was able to peel hers off fully. And they looked good.

She has quite thin, sparse brows (curse of the 90s) and is always looking for some kind of unicorn beauty product to either grow them or temporarily fill them in — because paying for a brow tint for so little hair, she says, seems pointless. However, every product I bring to her (serums! gels! tints!) tends to come back with mixed reviews.

This, however? She was a fan.

In comparison to Mum's noticeable results, I had a more subtle result as I didn't apply as much — though I still thought my brows looked pretty good. However, next time I'd probably leave it on for longer and apply more so it's easier to peel off.

I forgot to take a 'before' picture, but my brows basically looked a little sparse and in need of some definition. Here's what my brows looked like after (please try to ignore the horrid lighting that makes me look like I haven't slept for 45 days straight).

The verdict.

Would I use this peel-off brow tint again? Yes. A hundred times, yes.

It was easy to use (once you get your head around how much you need to apply), took minutes and made for an easy way to maintain the definition of your brows in between appointments. I would, as I mentioned before, apply a thicker layer and maybe leave it on for longer.

So, if you're looking for an affordable brow product that gives you fuller brows without the fuss (or battling to snap up an appointment at the last minute), give it a whirl!
