1. Elderly man “snapped” and killed wife for laughing at him, police say.
A 77-year-old man allegedly “just snapped” and stabbed his wife after she laughed at him when he accused her of having an affair.
Ben Ivanoff faced Gosford Local Court on Monday charged with the murder of his wife of 55 years, Leonne, the Central Coast Gosford Express Advocate reports.
The couple’s son Paul found his mother dead in their Central Coast home at Umina Beach after his father called him on Sunday afternoon. Paul called police, who arrested Mr Ivanoff.
The accused’s Legal Aid solicitor said he suffered from depression, macular degeneration, heart problems and had recently been diagnosed with depression.
Police allege that while there was no history of violence, the relationship had deteriorated in recent years.
It is alleged Mr Ivanoff believed his wife was having an affair and whenever he raised it with her she would laugh at him, which enraged him.
2. Donald Trump attacks Meryl Streep for Golden Globes speech.
US president-elect Donald Trump has hit back at actress Meryl Streep for her criticism of him in her Golden Globes acceptance speech.
Streep yesterday took aim at Mr Trump for mocking journalist Serge Kovaleski for his disability during a campaign rally in November 2015.
“That instinct to humiliate, when it’s modelled by someone in a public platform, it filters down into everyone’s life because it gives permission for others to do the same,” Streep said in front a crowd of her peers at the awards night.
