Welcome to the first day of 2019. We made it.

Depending on your physical, mental and emotional state today (a.k.a how much of a booze headache you have right now), the start of a fresh year is a great time to declutter.

One area that regularly needs attention but is often neglected is your makeup and skincare storage.

With so many great new products on the market (and recommended on Mamamia’s You Beauty podcast), it’s very easily to accumulate a lot of stuff. And that stuff needs a place to go that’s not shoved in your bathroom cabinet.

Thankfully, Mamamia’s executive editor and beauty editor of 15 years Leigh Campbell has some makeup storage tips to get your started.

The first is a very excellent Instagram account to help you get your beauty storage sorted.

“I have to tell you about this account, it’s called Dilly Declutter, they literally go into people’s houses and show before and afters, it’s beauty porn. They have the best tips,” she said on You Beauty (get it in your ears below).

While their Instagram feed isn’t too inspiring, Leigh said it’s worth following for the Instagram stories, which have plenty of makeup and beauty storage hacks.

You’ll also find a bunch of beauty storage ideas on Instagram using hashtags like #beautystorage or #makeupstorage.

Many use the clear makeup organisers you can find at IKEA, department stores, specialty storage shops and $2 shops.

Only catch is you have to keep them organised…

Another great trick Leigh heard about from one of her Instagram followers is to use a lazy Susan-style rotating board to store in your bathroom cupboards that are deep or make reaching products at the back tricky.

“One of my followers sent me the best tip, she used a lazy Susan from Kmart, put it in the middle of her cupboard and then it spins so you can always reach your products.”

The Kmart Storage Turntable, $5, is worth a try if you have deep cabinetry under your bathroom sink. It could even sit where you do your makeup, like this:

You Beauty Cheat Sheet

Other questions Leigh and Kelly answered, as well as their ‘spendys’ and ‘saveys’ (and where you can buy them).

‘Do I really need to throw away unfinished products after a period of time? I swear I have some eyeshadows that are 15 years old…’

• This depends on the product and type of formula.
• Check the back of your products for a tiny circle or tub with a number, 12 or 24 for how many months the product lasts.
• Natural and organic products don’t last that long, and mascaras should be three months.
• If you use face powders, eyeshadows and bronzers/highlighters hygienically with brushes you regularly clean, you can get away with using them longer.
• For active skincare products, liquid foundations and most importantly, sunscreen, you’ve got to abide by what it says on the back because the product won’t do what it says after that period.
• General rule is if it smells funny or the consistency has changed, chuck it.
• Using less products and keeping your routine well edited will help you use all your products before they expire.

‘I basically have a non existent skincare routine but in 2019 that’s about to change. Can you tell me what basic products I need to form a daily regime?’

• Here’s Leigh’s recommendation for the bare minimum skincare routine:
  • Morning: Cleanser, serum for your skin type and a day cream with SPF to go over your serum (if you can’t find one, add SPF on top).
  • Night: Cleanser, serum and/or face oil, and a night cream.
• For beginners, choose one brand and stick with products from the one brand because they’re formulated to work well together.
• Start small and once your skin has adjusted to this routine, you can think  about trying or adding/swapping in new products.

‘My hair is always in bad condition in summer and I’m determined to take better care of it this year. What products do you recommend to do so?’

• Leigh always wears a heavy conditioner or a heavy hair mask to the beach – run through your mid lengths and ends, and wrap hair in a top knot or a bun.
• Best to swim with hair in a top knot,which you can take out when you get home.
• Be mindful of heat styling and/or colouring in summer.
• Leigh said she tries to air dry her hair until it’s 80 per cent dry, also be careful wearing hair up, how tight and where the elastic is, alternate between high and low styles to avoid breakage.
• Using hydrating hair treatments are super important in summer, once or twice a week if you can.
• Finally, keep up your regular trims and use a clarifying shampoo once a week to remove product build up.

Leigh’s Spendy: Nude by Nature Flawless Concealer, $24.95.

Why she loves it:

• Leigh's goal is to wear less makeup in 2019, and getting concealer right is the key to wearing less makeup.
• It's a stick concealer and, in Leigh's opinion, is a dupe for cult Clé de Peau concealer.
• Really thick, but creamy, not drying in any way, and blends beautifully
• Too thick for under eyes but use on pigmentation and blend in.

Kelly's Spendy: Arbonne Genius Nightly Resurfacing Pads & Solution, $145.

Why she loves it:

• Great for around Christmas and the New Year when your skin is congested from partying etc.
• Contains retinoids to slough away skin cells and mandelic acid for cell turnover.
• Great for everyday use at night time.

Leigh's Savey: Schmidt's Natural Deodorant, Charcoal + Magnesium, $9.99.

Why she loves it:

• A lot of natural deodorants don't work, but this one does.
• Leigh's tested 12 different types and this is by far the best one.
• The scent isn't offensive, comes in a stick and is a creamy formula.
• You still feel a bit damp because it's not an antiperspirant, but it stops you from smelling sweaty.

Kelly's Savey: ModelCo Tan Remover Exfoliating Soap, $10, and ModelCo Exfoliate Double Sided Body Wipes, $13.

Why she loves them:

• Great separately for removing fake tan buildup or mistakes around the dry areas, and removing orange-ness.
• Kelly likes using them together for extra removing power.
• They're not fool-proof, but work pretty bloody well.
