The perfect Netflix show for anybody who is tired of true crime.

If you’re tired of true crime or done with drama, you need to watch Lovesick.

The British sit-com (or Britcom) is awkward, charming, heartbreaking and the perfect Netflix show to counter those January blues now the holidays are over and we’re back to work.

Originally airing in the UK in 2014 under the name ‘Scrotal Recall’ (Yes, it’s punny but kind of please they ditched that one), the first two seasons were on Netflix last year with the third dropping on New Year’s Day.

The premise is simple. After Dylan (Johnny Flynn), a hopeless romantic in his mid twenties, finds out he has chlamydia he's forced to contact all his exes over to tell them to get tested. Jumping back and forth between the past and present, each episode tells the story of what went wrong with that particular relationship. It's a relatable look at love, dating, relationships, friendships, feeling lost and life in general.

The constant throughout the series is his relationship with his two best friends Evie (Antonia Thomas) and Luke (Played by Daniel Ings, aka Mike from The Crown). Luke at first seems like just a playboy providing comic relief, but his character has real depth and ends up having one of the most emotional and powerful story lines in season two and three.

It's Evie and Dylan that are the real focus of the series, as we seem the two friends flit between platonic love and something deeper. The problem? They never quite manage to feel the same way at the same time. This conflict drives the first two seasons, flitting between the main plot and a side story as other relationships come and go for the pair.

It's hard not to draw comparisons to other great British coming of age TV shows like Skins, The Inbetweeners and Fresh Meat but this has something extra. It's romantic without being cheesy, as frustrating as relationships in real life and the characters are flawed yet likeable.

It's highly bingeable too - each season has about six to eight episodes of about half an hour. I started watching this with my housemates but after two episodes I was hooked and couldn't wait, bingeing the rest in two nights. I did the same to the third season last night.

Given the contacting exes could only go on for so long, the third season does a good job of maintaining the same spirit while moving the story on. It opens with Dylan and Luke lamenting about the risks of opening yourself up to someone, with Dylan appearing to be happy and in love. The series then plays out to show you who with.

It's not clear yet whether they'll be a fourth season, with the season finale wrapping things up quite nicely. It's not a perfect Hollywood ending but then again, real life rarely does.
