Important life lessons we learned from Center Stage.

Basically, just dance all the time. Oh, and don’t sleep with your superiors. BAD MOVE.

It’s been 15 long years since the best dance movie of all time (Sorry, Step Up) came out.

Center Stage, the 2000 classic that focused around a group of aspiring ballet students trying to navigate the world of dance, taught us so many things about life, love and inappropriate relationships.

To celebrate the 15 years since the movie debuted, we’ve put together the 15 life lessons we all learnt from Center Stage. 

1. There’s only one way to break up with someone.

“Cooper, you’re an amazing dancer, and you’re a great choreographer, but as a boyfriend … you kinda suck.”

2. Don’t sleep with your superior.

It’s a common one, but still important. Just don’t do it, guys.

3. Ballet should always be performed with motorcycles.

Seriously, make that shit more interesting. Center Stage NAILED it.

4. All sex scenes should have a Mandy Moore soundtrack.

We recommend you incorporate this into your bedroom repertoire immediately.

5. Just because you’re a ballerina, doesn’t mean you have no attitude.

Center Stage made ballet bad-ass well before Black Swan.

6. Technique isn’t everything; it’s all about performance.

If you can capture a room with your moves, you’ll probably be okay.

7. Red ballet shoes should be mandatory in life.

They make everything infinitely more interesting.

8. Jazz class is a great place to meet guys.

Naturally.

9. It put Jamiroquai on our radar.

‘Cosmic Girl’ has been our unofficial anthem ever since this end scene.

10. If a guy is treating you like shit, don’t give him cookies “for next time”.

‘Nuff said.

11. When everything is going wrong in your life, just salsa.

“What does she have that I don’t have?”

“She can salsa.”

“You call that salsa?”

12. If you don’t fit the mould, find your own.

Center Stage taught us to be ourselves and be true to the person that we are.

13.  If it’s making you unhappy, leave.

In the movie, the character Maureen realised she didn’t want to dance any more because she was only doing it to keep her mother happy. But this advice can be applied to any situation – jobs, relationships, cities…

You don’t have to do anything you’re not happy with.

14. There’s only one pick-up line that works for dancers.

“I noticed your dancing before I recognised your face.” Never forget it.

15. “WHATEVER YOU FEEL, JUST DANCE IT.”

Make this your mantra.
