Lena Dunham thought her boyfriend was about to propose. Instead, they broke up.

Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff dated for over five years. She, the creator and star of Girls, and he, an indie-rock band frontman.

It was a match made in millennial heaven that started with a blind date in 2012. They even had a dog together.

But alas, the dream is over, because the pair are done, as reps for both of them have confirmed to PEOPLE.

Sure, it might seem out of the blue. But for anyone in a long-term relationship who’s asked themselves, where is this going? only to find out the answer is, well, nowhere, you’ll be able to sympathise.

Why? Because in November, Dunham thought the relationship was heading in the complete opposite direction.

In a series of tweets, Dunham told the bleak story of how she thought Antonoff was going to propose to her, but didn’t. Not even a little bit.

I thought jack was furtively planning a proposal ???? to me with his sister and he just admitted I actually caught him “talking shit” about me!

Also they were huddled and I heard him say “Lena” and “finger” so obviously it seemed like an engagement ring talk

Neither Dunham or Antonoff have addressed their rumoured breakup publicly, there are other signs. Kind of. Maybe.

Like that Dunham yesterday attended the official HBO Golden Globes after party alone.

Also, it’s worth noting she also called herself “a crazy animal lady” in an Instagram story surrounded by hairless animals last week – a catchcry of singletons everywhere. But then again, that’s us every single day, so maybe there’s nothing to see after all?

Single or not, we can all agree that crazy animal ladies are the best kind of ladies.
