Laura Byrne publicly shared an honest conversation with Matty J. She wasn't prepared for what came next.

Laura Byrne is just six weeks away from welcoming her third child with her husband Matty J. The 39-year-old has been known to be candid about her pregnancies and parenting.

This week was no exception.

Speaking on her Life Uncut podcast with friend Brittany Hockley, Laura broached the topic of vasectomy, which is a surgical procedure for permanent contraception in men that involves cutting or blocking the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles.

Laura said she asked her husband Matty, 38, if he'd be open to getting one following the birth of their third child and the conversation "didn't go down as well" as she had hoped.

"I said to him, 'Okay, I think we're both on the same page that this is going to be the last baby. Once the baby's born, would you go and have a vasectomy?'" Laura shared on the podcast.

She continued: "His response was, 'I actually don't know, hey?' And I was like, 'What do you mean you don't know?' And he goes, 'I just don't know about the long-term effects'. And I was like, 'Sorry, the long-term effects of what? Of the lack of pregnancies.'"

Matty went on to clarify that he wasn't across "the effects on your body" of having a vasectomy.

Laura said: "'If we're going to talk about the effects on your body, how about we talk about the seventeen years that I was on the pill for? Then talk about the three pregnancies, and then talk about menopause?'"

Open and honest conversations about vasectomy and couples making decisions about their own bodies are important to normalise.

And yet, the discussion received a wave of backlash online, with many criticising Matty for his reluctance to undergo the procedure.

"I think Matt's just given me the ick ... sorry Laura, it is the LEAST the man can do," wrote one follower.

"Matt, grow up. It's the bare minimum you can do," added another.

The backlash reached such an extreme that, four hours after sharing the conversation online, Laura released a lengthy statement defending her husband.

"I feel as though a lot of assumptions are being made in the comments," she began the statement.

"Firstly — Matt absolutely plays his part in contraception, he is happy to wear a condom. I am the one who would prefer he doesn't wear one."

The Bachelor alum went on to say that she, personally, doesn't want to go on contraception.

"But if a man is happy to take responsibility for his part in contraception by wearing a condom, let's not jump to calling him a pussy and a loser because he shares reservations around getting the snip," she said.

Laura added that she knows this is a triggering conversation for so many women who "have experienced men not taking any responsibility and expecting women to front the load for everything in terms of contraception."

"However, this is not the case in my relationship, so please keep that in mind, she finished.

Many followers resonated with Laura and Matty's situation, and jumped to the latter's defence.

"The comments are why men don't have these conversations. Matt is entitled to his feelings and they as a couple will make the choice," wrote one listener.

Laura and Matty met on The Bachelor Australia in 2017. They share two daughters together, Marlie-Mae and Lola. Their third child, a girl they plan to name Poppy, is due in September this year.

A week after announcing they were pregnant with baby number three, Matty spoke candidly about his fears around the pregnancy during his podcast Two Doting Dads, which he hosts alongside Ash Wicks.

He said that he and Laura had previously suffered two miscarriages while building their family, a grief that made him hesitant to celebrate.

"When I found out, we were at 11 weeks. We didn't even have the big tests, and so I was conscious that it was very early days, and I didn't want to celebrate that we were having a kid," he said.

"Our first child was a miscarriage, then Laura was pregnant with Marlie. After Marlie was born, she got pregnant again and we lost that child around 12 weeks. And then we had Lola."

He continued, adding he was worried they are "kind of due for another miscarriage".

"I have moments where I'm trying to envision having a newborn baby in the house, but at the same time, every time I start to imagine it, I put the handbrake up.

"Because I'm like, just waiting for those signs that something might be going wrong… It's so hard because when that is taken away from you, there's no greater emotional whiplash than having a miscarriage."

At the time of that podcast recording, Laura was 15 weeks along. The main tests have since been done and Matty said the pregnancy is "tracking nicely".

Last month, speaking to Stellar's Something To Talk About podcast, Laura said she knows the chaos that is about to come with three kids but, despite everything, she feels "the most relaxed about this one" than she's ever been.

After the parents found out they were welcoming another girl, Matty joked on KIIS FM's The Pick Up, "Am I capable of producing boys? I'm worried. Let's go again. Let's go for a fourth."

Then, in a sincere moment, Matty said that he "love[s] being a 'girl dad'".

"Obviously, that's matched with a feeling of the fact that I'm never going to have a son. I'm happy. I'm thrilled to have a beautiful girl."

Laura added, "I love you honey. It's going to be the best thing ever. We are so lucky to have two little girls and think about three little sisters together. It's going to be amazing."
