If you’re someone who didn’t know a whole lot about 32-year-old Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, who goes professionally by Lady Gaga, then A Star is Born came as quite the… shock.
My initial surprise quickly turned to guilt as I realised I had definitely dismissed her around 2009 as ‘just another pop star’ who made headlines for wearing a dress made of meat.
This is, of course, entirely on me. For loyal Gaga fans, her talent – the kind that comes along perhaps once in a generation – had been visible from the outset.
They watched as she reinvented herself, sung about LGBTQI rights, and even stripped her whole image down to release a series of soulful ballads in her album Joanne.
They knew she was the real deal who was masterfully playing the game. A game which has won her six Grammys, several Guinness world records, and a place on Time’s list of most influential people in the last 10 years.
Gaga is also one of the best selling music artists in history.
