When Lady Gaga was at uni, her peers made a Facebook group to troll her. Now who's laughing?

Before Lady Gaga was the Oscar-winning singer, songwriter and actress we know her as today, she was Stefani Germanotta.

An unassuming 18-year-old student at New York University (NYU), Germanotta studied at the university’s Tisch School of the Arts, playing gigs at local bars around the city before dropping out to pursue her music career on her own.

Then, at the age of 22, Germanotta became Lady Gaga and went on to release six albums, win nine Grammy awards, star in her own Las Vegas residency and create some of the most iconic pop culture moments of the last decade.

But to some of her NYU classmates, she was an attention seeker who would never be famous. They even went as far to create a Facebook group called ‘Stefani Germanotta, you will never be famous’.

Following Gaga’s Oscar for Best Original Song for A Star Is Born’s ‘Shallow’ at the 2019 Academy Awards, images from the troll Facebook group resurfaced on Twitter.

According to a former group member who spoke about the cruel Facebook group back in 2016, the group was “peppered with comments, sharp as porcupine needles, vilifying the aspiring musician for being an ‘attention-whore’.”

“Scores asked: “Who does she think she is?” I also remember one dude posting a flyer for one of her upcoming gigs at a local village bar. He had clearly stomped on the flyer, an outline of his muddy sole struggling to eclipse her name,” Lauren Bohn wrote about her experience of the Facebook group’s activity.

While the troll group is still active, with an admin member posting ‘OUR GROUP WILL BE RELEASED SOON AGAIN’ in October, 2018, we have a feeling Gaga’s recent success makes her NYU days surrounded by people who didn’t believe in her talent feel like a lifetime ago.

Last week, Gaga became the first person ever to win a BAFTA, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a Grammy in the same year, according to Harper’s Bazaar.

As her former classmate Bohn put it:

“Stefani, thank you. Thank you for always thinking you’re a superstar, for using your cracks to let the light come out more brightly. Humans, let’s follow suit.”
