An expert weighs in on the 'Korean 2-in-1' haircut you're about to see everywhere.

I'm someone who's very easily swayed by hair trends.

Take the 'old money bob'; I so desperately wanted to chop all my hair off, but a part of me was:

A) Extremely scared; and

B) Still very much into the idea of having long, voluminous hair I could throw into a bun or a slicked back ponytail whenever I felt like it.

If you're like me and simply cannot decide whether you want long hair or short hair, boy oh boy, do I have something for you.

Please say hello to… the Korean two-in-one haircut.

As the name suggests, this viral haircut promises to give you long and short hair at the same time.

What? How???

Before you book in with your hairdresser, let's break down the Korean two-and-one haircut and whether you should get it.

What is the Korean two-in-one haircut?

It's exactly what it sounds like.

This two-in-one style gives the illusion of two completely different hair cuts: A short bob and long, swishy layers.

The haircut first went viral in an Instagram Reel created by Korean hairstylist @hmn.2ve, which has since racked up over 14.7 million views at the time of writing.

As shown in their TikTok video above, this haircut works by splitting the hair into two sections.

The underneath section is chopped straight across into a bob, while the top layer is left long with curtain bang-esque shape around the front.

When the top layer is tied up or clipped back, you've got a chic bob moment. And when your hair is down, it looks like you never cut it at all.

Genius? Maybe. Weird? Also a maybe.

Hairstylists and creators have since started road-testing this viral haircut, and it appears to be a solution to the age-old conundrum of 'to chop or not to chop'.

But does this haircut genuinely offer the best of both worlds or is it too good to be true?

Honestly, I still don't know.

And judging by the thousands of comments under these videos, neither does anyone else.

Some are calling it innovative. Others are rebranding it "undercut regrowth-core".

Which hair types will suit the Korean two-in-one haircut (and which won't)?

So, what do experts think?

According to highly-respected hairstylist Christian Alexander, like most trends, the Korean two-in-one haircut won't suit everyone.

Alexander explained this style of haircut was designed with thicker, straighter hair in mind.

"The defined shape of the underlayer bob needs a clear difference between the top and bottom sections — the cut really shines when your hair has natural weight and structure."

For those with curls, coils or fine hair, Alexander says this hairstyle is "going to be nearly impossible to maintain and could end up looking more chaotic than chic".

If you're unsure, it's definitely worth booking a consultation before anyone goes near your hair with scissors.

Want to try the Korean two-in-one haircut?

Important PSA: This cut is NOT low-maintenance.

"You're dealing with two very different lengths, so regular trims are essential to keep the top from getting too heavy and the undercut clean," Alexander cautioned.

"It's a very high-maintenance hairstyle, so if you're going to do it, you better be willing to commit."

You'll also need to get comfy with styling each section individually. It is two haircuts, after all.

While styling the hair when worn down is easier thanks to the longer layers that conceal the bob, you'll likely need to smooth, curl or blow-dry the underneath to make the shorter style (aka your bob moment) work.

If you're sitting on the long hair versus short hair fence, this might be your stylish albeit high-maintenance loophole.

But would an expert recommend it?

"If someone asked me to do this haircut, I'd probably say no, with love!" Alexander admitted.

"I do love that people are experimenting and having fun with their hair, but [this haircut] kind of breaks every rule I've ever followed in hairdressing!"

That said, Alexander agreed that if a haircut makes someone feel great, all power to them.

Best advice for those keen on the Korean two-in-one haircut is to show your hairstylist one of the many viral Reels or TikToks out there (my pick would be the OG one from @hmn.2ve). 

Also ask your stylist for (and listen to!) their professional opinion.

A good stylist will let you know whether the two-in-one cut will work with your hair type, texture and how you usually style it.

Finally, just remember…. if you get the haircut and regret it, hair always grows back.
