After months of waiting for the temperatures to drop, it’s safe to say that winter is slowly starting to creep up on us.
The morning chill has us unpacking our winter wardrobe and dusting off our coats from storage.
As a fashion writer, clothes excite me (I’d be concerned if they didn’t), but the clothing item that has always held a special place in my heart is the humble knitwear.
There’s truly nothing more versatile than knitwear. From the endless styles available, such as cardigans, cable-knit, and v-necks, to their functionality on a cold winter’s day, jumpers are an essential item that should be found in everyone’s wardrobe.
This year, I’m heading straight to Myer to stock up on knits that not only will keep me warm and toasty but also are perfect for layering when I prefer something less bulky.
Before you start doing some serious financial damage, it’s important to note there’s an art to buying and storing knitwear, one that I’m proud to say I’ve mastered over the years.
If you want your knitwear to last you more than one season, then taking care of it is crucial. Unlike fabrics such as linen and denim, knits can be delicate and prone to pilling. How many expensive jumpers have you bought only for them to stretch out and look unflattering after a few wears?
If you’re investing money into quality pieces then you need to follow these simple rules:
Always fold your knitwear, never hang. This way, the shoulders, neckline and sleeves won’t become droopy over time.
Hand wash only! Unless you want to kill the fibres, then by all means throw it in the wash, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Get yourself a lint shaver, because it’s the only way to get rid of pills and make your knitwear look brand new.
With Myer selling so many styles, colours and compositions, it’s important to know exactly what you want, how you’re going to be wearing it, and where you live (because let’s be honest, Tassie folks have different needs to those in Queensland). Luckily, the department store has it all (no, seriously, they have thousands of options), and because my job is to make your life easier, I spent hours perusing their website for the best knits money can buy.
