Highlighters are a tricky thing. They can either add a beautiful glow to your skin, emphasising your best features to strategically lift and contour your face. Or, they can make you look like you've accidentally fallen into a pit of glitter and oil.
While perfecting your application technique plays a role in the final result, choosing the right product and shade for your exact skin tone is what truly makes or breaks a highlighter's effect.
Feeling overwhelmed and confused? Don't worry, you're not alone.
In a recent episode of a You Beauty podcast, a listener asked beauty experts Leigh Campbell and Kelly McCarren the same question.
Referring to a previous Tried & Tested segment where hosts Em Vernem and Erin Docherty discussed highlight undertones (you can listen to the episode here), the listener said:
"I was listening to the pod today, and Em was talking about how she has a highlighter with a gold base because that's what suits her skin tone. And this kind of blew my mind. I was wondering how we can tell products that suit us more with a gold base or a silver base. I find that I don't use highlighter at all because I don't like how it looks on me, but maybe it's just that I've been using the wrong one. So now I'm wondering, like lipsticks and eyeshadows and blushes and all those sorts of things, how do we find out which ones will suit us best?"
