Khloé Kardashian confided in her therapist. Then she read a story about herself in a magazine.

Khloé Kardashian has long been known for her love of fitness, but in a recent interview with Bustle, she shared the real, and unfortunate, reason behind her decision to turn to exercise as a form of therapy.

During her divorce from former NBA star Lamar Odom, Kardashian sought therapy to work through her struggles. But soon, she realised that her therapist had breached doctor-patient privilege and leaked what she had said to a tabloid.

"I remember I was going to therapy and the next thing I knew, something private I told my therapist was on a tabloid," she said.

"And I knew that my therapist disclosed this information to a tabloid because there's no way this could have gotten out there."

While Kardashian didn't reveal what exactly she said to her therapist about her marriage to Odom, it was widely reported at the time of their divorce that the marriage ended due to Odom's struggle with addiction and infidelity. The two were married between 2009 until 2016, when they finalised their divorce.

The shocking betrayal by her therapist was both "very jarring and sort of unbelievable" and had a lasting effect on Kardashian, and made her to sceptical about therapy for many years after. During this time, she turned her attention to exercise as a form of release.

"I stopped going to therapy and started going to the gym," she explained. "I needed a release, but I did not trust anybody else anymore. And the place that I felt the safest was the gym."

Now, at 40, Kardashian has finally revisited her relationship with therapy, mostly at the encouragement of her sister, Kim

"I started when I was 39," she said.

"I really like her. It's actually Kim's therapist," Kardashian said. "Kim was really adamant. I was like, 'I'll do this for you.' I dragged my feet, and then I was like, 'Wow, okay, this is good. I needed this.'"

With help from her new therapist, Kardashian said that she has never felt better in her life. Speaking about her experience being 40, everything seems to have worked out for the best, despite the hiccups along the way.

"When you're young, you think 40 is so old, and now I'm like, 'Wait — I feel so good!'" she said. "I am in the best shape of my life. I'm doing new career stuff. I've only been 40 for about six months, but it's the absolute best."Feature image: Instagram/khloekardashian.
