Kayla Jade built her following sharing stories about sex work. Then her fans crossed a line.

Influencer and sex worker Kayla Jade became popular among Aussie women for the juicy gossip she so generously shares with her audience about her clients and their (sometimes freaky) requests.

However, it's not just the tea that makes her so beloved — it's her candidness.

Kayla is refreshingly honest, something that differentiates her from other members of the influencer crowd. She is open about how much money she makes, her political opinions and what her work entails — both the good, and the bad.

Between her mesmerising "get ready with me" videos where she recounts, erm, interesting sexual fetishes, to her ASMR videos counting the stacks of $100 bills she is paid by her clients, it's no surprise that she has become such a hit online. She feels like a real person dishing you juicy gossip over Facetime.

But, as we all know, this is often a recipe for disaster online. In fact, it's precisely this image of authenticity that has led to some odd behaviour from so-called fans — namely, entitled speculation about Kayla's personal life.

Rumours about Kayla having a secret personal life began circulating online after fellow influencer and sex worker Anna Paul — who was once Australia's sweetheart and praised for her positive attitude and disposition — was accused of nasty behaviour and feigning a background of poverty to garner sympathy online.

The messy debacle appears to have ignited trust issues amongst the fans of these personalities because it wasn't long before people online began to wonder who else was selling them a facade online.

Soon after this, rumours circulated that Kayla was secretly married and had children — a fact that probably wouldn't be considered controversial if she wasn't a sex worker.

Kayla Jade then took to TikTok to address the rumours and confirmed in a video that she is indeed a mother to two children, though she is not in a relationship with the childrens' father who she co-parents with.

"So there is something in my life that I've worked really hard to keep private," she said in the video.

"Being in the public eye, I understand that my life is very public, for the most part. But that doesn't mean I'm comfortable broadcasting a hundred percent of all of it.

"Yes, the rumours are true, I am a mum to two beautiful kids that I am really proud of and are the center of my world, [and] who, for obvious reasons, I have tried to keep off the internet."

Kayla said that it had "never been a secret" that she was a mother — she simply didn't bring it up on her profile to protect the privacy and safety of her children.

"I am in a high-risk industry," she said.

"The number one rule for [sex] work is don't tell people about your private life because you risk them invading it."

Kayla said that even if she wasn't concerned for the safety of her children, it would still be "weird" to discuss them on an account that centres on her sex work. But that being said, she revealed that she had seen comments online of people asking for photos of her children, descriptions of what they looked like, their ages and names which left her worried about her security.

"[This] really freaked me out and really reiterated why I chose not to talk about them in the first place," she said.

"I've spoken on here before about how passionate I am about parents not posting their kids on social media, especially influencers. We've all seen the damage that can cause. Kids are unable to consent to be made a public figure.

"You know I love sharing my experiences with you, but my kids' safety and privacy is what's most important."

While it's admirable that Kayla can remain so steadfast on her stance of protecting her children, it's pretty unfair that she's been put in that position in the first place. Why should she have to share that she is a mother? Why is anyone entitled to this information? Since when is it okay to force women to disclose their private relationships?

It's not only bizarre to demand to know (or to expose!) these details of another person's life to the public, it's also dangerous. As Kayla already mentioned, sex work is a high risk industry. Femicide and violence against women and chilren is one of the biggest issues in Australia, and when you factor in sex work, the threat is amplified.

Kayla knows better than everyone who her clients and fans are, and she knows what dangers they can pose to her children — yes, she has the right to protect her children from weirdos online, but she also has the responsibility to. And the sooner people stop being entitled to the private lives of women who are already generously sharing more than they need to, the safer the world will be.
