Tom Cruise’s 2005 couch-jumping moment showed the world just how excited the actor was to be dating his then-girlfriend Katie Holmes. Perhaps a little too excited, many of us thought.
But it turns out Holmes was just as obsessed with her future husband as he apparently was with her – and had been for more than a decade earlier.
A Dawson’s Creek co-star of Holmes’, Mary Beth Peil, told The Daily Beast that when Tom Cruise came up in conversation a few years before the couple met, she learned the young actress was “ready” for him.
Peil, who played Michelle William’s character’s grandma, Grams, on the teen drama, said the chat came up rather awkwardly.
Cruise’s ex-wife Mimi Rogers, whom he was married to from 1987 to 1990, was guest starring on the show for an episode that aired in 2003.
While getting her hair and makeup done alongside Holmes and Peil, the older actress brought up the Top Gun star, not realising who was alongside her.
“Somebody said, ‘Jerry Maguire.’ ‘Yeah, yeah,’ I said. Looking in the mirror, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Katie make the motion for me to ‘zip it’.”
Once Rogers had left the room, Katie explained who she was to her co-star and to Peil, the obsession was clear.
“Katie launched into a big spiel about Tom Cruise being married to Mimi Rogers, Scientology, Nicole Kidman… She knew everything about him.
“She said, ‘I have had a crush on him since I was 15, and his posters were on the walls of my bedroom.’ She could not stop talking about Tom Cruise.
