Kate Winslet has finally explained her new baby’s, err, grizzly name in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres.
Luckily, 14-week-old Bear Blaze Winslet escaped with his mum’s last name rather than that of his dad, Ned Rocknroll.
Kate explained that the name Bear was chosen by the family quite early in the pregnancy, and that her older kids Mia, 13, and Joe, 10, were involved in the decision.
She said in the interview: “It was really lovely actually, they [the older children] were very much included, and we settled on bear quite early on. A friend of mine, when I was younger, was nicknamed Bear and I just really loved it. And he was very much a bear. He was everyone’s shoulder to cry on, he was a big bear hug, he was just this great figure in my life.”
She also explained that the kid’s second name has its origin in the quirky meeting-place of his parents.
“Bear’s second name is Blaze, because my husband and I met in a house fire basically, and the house burned down, and we survived.”
A kind-of-awkward exchange then ensued when Ellen asked about Ned Rocknroll’s last name.
Kate: People who know Ned know that he’s very much about irony and living life and having fun, so he changed it to Rocknroll. He did it before he met me.
Ellen: Why, would you have objected to that?
Kate: No. I have to say that, don’t I?
Ellen: But is Bear’s last name Winslet? It’s not Rocknroll? Why’s that?
Kate: Why do you think, Ellen?
Bear is the first child that Kate Winslet and Ned Rocknroll have had together. No news yet on whether they’re planning on a second, but we kind of hope they do so we can take bets on its name.
(Wolf Wind, anyone?)
