Dr Kate Adams had recently bought a property when she needed to engage a mortgage broker for finance. She had already put down the deposit and got a recommendation from a friend for a broker to secure a loan.

But when the Real Housewives of Sydney star and owner of Bondi Vet Hospital mentioned the amount she needed, there was "silence on the phone".

"He says to me, 'Before we go down this path, I need to tell you the bank will not consider income that is made from OnlyFans'," Dr Adams said in a reel posted on Instagram.

The broker didn't even know her name yet, she says, yet he had made this assumption.

Dr Adams couldn't believe what she'd heard.

"Wow, the subconscious misogyny is at an all-time f***ing high at this point," she said in the video.

"This guy thinks that I'm on OnlyFans, and he thinks that the only way that women can actually make a crust in this world is if they're on OnlyFans."

Dr Adams decided to play along, telling him, "What's wrong with OnlyFans? Money's money."

He replied, "It's just the way it is," adding, "I'm really sorry, but the bank will not loan any money to any woman who takes her clothes off on the internet."

It was at that point she shared who she was: "Well, isn't it lucky that I'm not on OnlyFans. I'm sorry, I don't think I introduced myself. I'm Doctor Kate Adams."

Beyond her gotcha moment, Dr Adams made a crucial point about systemic bias.

"What if I wasn't Dr Kate Adams? What if I was just some other person who had earned money not on OnlyFans," she said.

"There are plenty of women out there with great jobs that are not earning money on OnlyFans and didn't get their money from the one place that apparently men think we can get money."

Then there's the second tier of misogyny: the prejudice against women who do earn their money from platforms like OnlyFans.

For consenting adults, sex work is valid work, and OnlyFans can be highly profitable.

Dr Adams said there shouldn't be anything wrong with someone earning their money from OnlyFans.

"Money is money," she said. And she's absolutely right.

The reality is, OnlyFans creators do face legitimate hurdles when applying for mortgages. As self-employed borrowers with fluctuating incomes, they're often seen as high-risk borrowers by lenders.

According to mortgage advisor service FinancePath, some lenders may not offer products tailored to the non-traditional income sources of OnlyFans creators, limiting their options. But rather than dismissing clients outright, a mortgage broker's job is to help find solutions and advocate for them.

As Dr Adams put it: "Undervaluing women's income (by invalidating the source), double standards and male-dominated financial leadership equals a structural system that keeps women poorer."

That's the real issue here — systemic discrimination that assumes women can't possibly have earned their money legitimately, while simultaneously shaming those who choose sex work as their profession.
