At 12, Kat Dennings was auditioning for a role when a casting director said something 'really gross'.

Kat Dennings has been acting for most of her life.

You may know her from the sitcom 2 Broke Girls, her role in Marvel's Thor, or maybe you've even watched her new series, Shifting Gears.

But if you're an OG Sex and the City fan, you'll know that Dennings was actually a child actor — she famously played the obnoxious 13-year-old Jenny Brier in one season 3 episode.

By now, we're all pretty well-versed on the lack of care that the entertainment industry has had child actors in the past, and unfortunately Dennings' story is no different. In a new interview, the actress spoke about the extreme body shaming she experienced as a young girl.

In a new interview with People, Dennings spoke in detail about just how "cruel" Hollywood was to her as a young child actress.

"The time that I was auditioning and starting to act, it was a very different environment than it is now," she said. "There was not a lot of inclusivity at all. It was very harsh. There was a lot of extremely negative feedback and people would not hold back."

Dennings went on to recount a time that her manager relayed some horrific feedback from a casting director after an audition. She was 12 years old at the time.

"For example, I was 12. I'd go into an audition and I'd do it, and my manager would call me and I'd be like, 'How'd it go?'" she recalled. "And they'd be like, 'Well, they thought you weren't pretty enough and you're fat.'"

Dennings added, "It was pretty crazy thinking about it. I'm like, 'How can anyone say that about a little kid? This is insane,'" she said.

While Dennings was taken aback by the harsh critique of her body, she maintained that she never let it define her or "break her spirit." Instead, she used it as motivation to prove them wrong.

"That was my attitude. For some reason, it didn't break my spirit. I was like, 'I'll show them,'" she said. "I guess props to my parents, because they were like, 'They're idiots. Don't listen to them.' And I was like, 'They're idiots, I'm not.'"

When it comes to the industry today, Dennings acknowledged that there has been a huge shift in regard to body acceptance, and that the commentary is much "softer" and "kinder" these days.

"There's body positivity, there's inclusivity, there's representation, and there was none of that before. It was really gross," she added.
