Kailyn Lowry found fame in the Teen Mom franchise. Now, she says they gave her the 'bad edit'.

It has been 15 years since 16 & Pregnant first aired on MTV, which means many of the original cast now have teenage children. Yes, yes we really do feel old.

One of the founding mums of the Teen Mom franchise, Kailyn Lowry was just 17-years-old when we were invited into her life to see the intimate trials and tribulations of a young mother.

As we know, reality TV isn't perfect, but in the almost two decades since 16 & Pregnant has aired, Lowry has come forward to share her frustrations over how her story was portrayed all those years ago.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the now 33-year-old has opened up about feeling upset over gaps in the production of the series.

"Isaac's name was spelt wrong, and when they put the lower thirds up and it said the timeframe, they were a little bit off," she said.

"I remember being frustrated by that. Like, 'I just gave up my whole story. I filmed my entire pregnancy and some of the details were wrong."

Before her son's first birthday she was invited to be a cast member on spin-off series Teen Mom 2. Unfortunately, her trust in the production team didn't improve when she felt like her story wasn't told in its entirety and her narrative was pigeonholed.

"You have to remember that we were filming for weeks, and then it has to be edited down to just a few minutes," she said.

"When it gets edited down, it's so that it makes sense and it's digestible for the viewers. Nobody really prepared us for that aspect of it, and that was really frustrating at times for sure. When I was feeling like my full story wasn't being told in the most transparent way or full picture kind of way, I would pull back and not want to say certain things. It's like at the point that I'm giving it to you and it's not airing in the way that it should, then why share?"

Despite feeling somewhat frustrated, for the most part, Lowry has positive memories about her time on the show and says that having a time capsule of such a monumental moment in her life is something she holds dear.

"It was kind of also nice to have some of the stuff documented, so I had something to look back on," she explained.

"And I still remember when we watched it (16 & Pregnant), when it aired. Isaac was born in January of 2010, and then the episode didn't air until four months later. And I remember being like, 'Wow, is that me on TV? Is this national?' I don't think that it fully had sunk in yet."

Now, in 2025, she's no longer the fresh-faced teen trying to figure out motherhood — things are looking very different for Lowry.

Who is Kailyn Lowry?

In 2010, a high school senior from Pennsylvania named Kailyn Lowry gave birth to her first child at just 17-years-old. She and boyfriend Jo Rivera welcomed little Isaac and committed to raising him together.

However, after experiencing the intense pressure placed on new parents, their relationship did not survive and they called it quits.

Having grown up in a house fraught with financial instability, she continued filming Teen Mom in the hopes she would be able to provide a better life for her and her son.

How many children does Kailyn Lowry have?

Kailyn Lowry is the proud and busy mum to seven children.

In 2010, she welcomed Isaac with her high school boyfriend, Jo Rivera. Isaac has recently turned 15, just two years shy of the age his mother was when she gave birth to him.

Two years after the birth of Isaac, Lowry welcomed her second son and first child with ex-husband Javi Marroquin. The two featured on season 4 of Teen Mom, however, they eventually ended in divorce in 2015.

In 2017, Lowry struck up a relationship with Chris Lopez, and they became parents to a son named Lux. Then, in 2020 they welcomed a second child together — a son named Creed.

Lowry and Lopez continued an on-off romance until 2020 before ending things for good. At the time Lowry opened up about the challenges surrounding co-parenting with three different former partners.

"It's just kind of hard," she said in an interview with PEOPLE.

"The dynamics are different between me and Chris, than with me and Javi [Marroquin] or me and Jo [Rivera]. It's a different kind of co-parenting."

Two years later in 2022, Lowry quietly welcomed a fifth son, and chose to keep the news from the public until the next year.

Little Rio "had a little bit of a traumatic entrance into this world where he went to the NICU," she said on her podcast. Despite the challenging early days, Lowry later opened up about what a great baby he was and how happy she was in her new relationship with his father, fiance Elijah Scott.

In 2023, she became a mum for the sixth and seventh time when she gave birth to twins Verse and Valley.

The birth marked her sixth son and first daughter!

How is Kailyn Lowry's relationship with Jo Rivera now?

Lowry's relationship with Jo Rivera was a focal point of her storyline on 16 & Pregnant all those years ago — so where do they stand now?

Opening up to PEOPLE, Lowry says her relationship with Rivera has evolved since they first became parents in 2010.

She admits that while they aren't the best of friends, they put their son Isaac first and have a healthy approach to communicating as co-parents.

"Now that Isaac's 15, we don't have a whole lot to fight about at this point," she said.

"We really only communicate if we absolutely have to because I think that, for the most part, we've gotten through most of the hard stuff."

Where is Kailyn Lowry now?

In 2022, Lowry made the decision to leave Teen Mom and announced her departure during the season 11 reunion. She recalls feeling like her story had "run its course" and she was ready to move on.

Since leaving the series, Lowry has been able to focus her efforts into building a podcast network called KILLR. Under the network she has added a number of podcast shows to her CV including, Coffee Convos, Baby Mamas, No Drama and Barely Famous.

She has also helped produce Cate and Ty: Break It Down featuring Teen Mom alumni Tyler and Catelynn Baltierra.

When it comes to what's in store next for Lowry she's got her sights set on building a successful future for herself outside the Teen Mom domain.

"I hope to potentially keep building the brands to the point where people don't necessarily remember me as someone on Teen Mom," she told PEOPLE.

"It's building something to a place where I can take a step back and not be the face of everything. I think that would be the goal for the next 15 years."

We think 17-year-old Kailyn would be pretty proud of how far she's come.
