'My intentions were not pure.' The resurfaced Justin Baldoni interview that shows who he really is.

As soon as he met his now-wife Emily, Justin Baldoni knew that she was his soulmate. She, however, wasn't convinced. And it almost broke him.

In a resurfaced interview from two years ago, the It Ends With Us director — who is currently being sued by co-star Blake Lively — spoke about the early days of his relationship with Emily, explaining that his instant obsession with the Swedish-born actress nearly destroyed their relationship.

"I just knew, it was like in every fibre of being, that I met my soulmate," he told Penn Badgley on Podcrushed. "She didn't know, and nobody prepared me for that… I was just infatuated with her, I was in love, and we weren't even full-on dating yet."

According to Baldoni, Emily (née Foxler) refers to this time in their relationship as Baldoni's "puppy dog phase". He would follow her around at a party, not interested in speaking with anybody else.

While the director thought he was abandoning the rules of masculinity for an earnest approach, he soon realised he was "suffocating" Emily.

"She had never met a guy that was this open and vulnerable," Baldoni said. "And she had no clue what to do with me.

"I was suffocating her with my passion and my intensity and my love. It pushed her away. And then I didn't know what to do."

After some self-reflection, the Jane the Virgin actor admitted that his "intentions were not pure" and he was acting "extremely co-dependently".

"I was needing her versus wanting her. And she was picking up on that energy," he said.

Baldoni and Emily, both now 40, then spent a year and a half working on their relationship — time the actor considers valuable in laying the foundations for their partnership.

"I never imagined I could have a marriage as happy and healthy as I have right now," said Baldoni, adding that he falls more in love with his wife as time goes on.

"You hear men talk about marriage like, 'Well, if you ever want to have sex again, don't get married'. And you hear the whole 'ball and chain' thing; that's not at all my experience," he said.

Baldoni and Emily wed in 2013, three months after getting engaged. The bride and groom shared footage from their wedding on YouTube, which included their vows.

Unconventionally, Baldoni began his speech with an apology.

"I'm sorry for all my faults, my shortcomings, for my insecurities and my ego and for everything that I've ever done or said that's hurt you. And everything I've ever brought to this relationship that hasn't been pure," he said.

"But with that apology also comes a promise," he added. "Emily, for the rest of my life, I will cherish you, I will appreciate you, I will listen to you, I will laugh with you, I will take care of you, I will honour you and I will respect you."

For her own vows, Emily told Justin that she loved him "truly, madly, deeply".

"I will stand strong by your side," she continued. "Grateful to have a man that will go above and beyond to comfort a friend or simply make someone feel loved.

"I will stand firm by your side, deeply appreciative to have a man who inspires me and the people around him to live life more fully."

Emily added that she felt "blessed" to have a man who speaks for those who don't have the strength to speak for themselves.

"And a man who will go without sleep to make sure somebody's story is shared with the world, because where there is love, nothing is too much trouble and there is always time."

Earlier this month, actress Blake Lively filed a lawsuit against Baldoni, accusing him of sexual harassment during filming for It Ends With Us, and orchestrating a smear campaign against her.

Lively alleged that, during filming, an "all hands" meeting was conducted in order to discuss Baldoni's behaviour on set. During the meeting, Baldoni was allegedly told he could no longer show Lively "nude videos or images of women" and to cease mentioning the "cast and crew's genitalia", his past "porn addiction", his sexual conquests, Lively's weight, or her "dead father".

Baldoni was also allegedly instructed that there would be "no more adding of sex scenes, oral sex or on camera climaxing by [Lively] outside the scope of the script [Lively] approved when signing onto the project".

In the lawsuit, Lively has also accused Baldoni of launching a social media smear campaign against her after hiring a "crisis management" team. The lawsuit includes several alleged text messages between Baldoni and his team, with one from his publicist claiming that Baldoni "wants to feel like [Lively] can be buried".
