McMahon was born in Sydney on July 27, 1968. His parents were Sir William McMahon, who served as Australia's 20th Prime Minister from 1971 to 1972, and Lady Sonia Rachel McMahon, an Australian socialite and philanthropist.

He started out in the industry as a model before he transitioned to a lead role in the short-lived Aussie daytime soap opera The Power, The Passion.

The actor also appeared in beloved Australian soap opera Home and Away.

He made his feature acting debut as the lead in the 1992 Australian-American film Wet and Wild Summer! before moving to Hollywood to continue his acting career.

He was best known for his starring roles on TV shows Nip/Tuck and Charmed as well as the Fantastic Four movies, where he played villain Dr Doom.

His role as Dr Christian Troy on FX's plastic surgery drama Nip/Tuck earned him a Golden Globe.

McMahon recently starred in the 2024 film, The Surfer, starring Nicolas Cage. And he played the Australian prime minister in Netflix's murder mystery series The Residence.

In 1994, McMahon married singer and actress Dannii Minogue, whom he met on the set of Home and Away in 1991.

"He stopped me in my tracks," Minogue said of McMahon in an interview with Seven.

As they were both pursuing their own careers, McMahon in the U.S. and Minogue in the U.K., the couple spent a lot of time apart, and eventually divorced a year and a half after marrying.

In 1999, McMahon married Baywatch actor Brooke Burns. They welcomed a daughter, Madison, in June 2000 before divorcing a year later.

The actor married a third time in 2014 to model Kelly Paniagua.

From the 1990s, McMahon resided in the States, but his heart always felt it belonged Down Under.

"I feel like I'm Australian on the inside and American on the outside or something," he told Female.com.au.

"I would never want to leave it behind either. I love Australians, Australianisms, I love my part of being Australian. I love where I grew up and how I grew up and, you know, I wouldn't change it for the world."
