The one quote that proves the Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jennifer Love Hewitt feud is real.

Pop on a Spice Girls album and dust off your old Tamagotchi because the '90s are back, baby.

Guess what we're talking about today? A feud between scream queens, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Retro, hey!

These two women with three names reigned supreme in the '90s and '00s: Hewitt was a huge movie star (and short-lived pop star, remember??) and, of course, Gellar was literally Buffy the Vampire Slayer, along with making a huge splash with roles in Cruel Intentions and Scooby Doo.

These two women joined forces in 1997 when SMG and JLH co-starred in I Know What You Did Last Summer, a film that just copped a 2025 requel (reboot/sequel).

From the get-go, rumours circulated amongst fans and tabloid outlets that the two actresses were feuding on set.

And almost 30 years on, those rumours aren't going anywhere. Especially because, well… the actresses still seem not to be able to be in the same room together.

At the Los Angeles premiere of I Know What You Did Last Summer — attended by both Hewitt and Gellar — they were not photographed together.

Curiously, Gellar's husband Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer didn't get any photos together on their own at the event, either.

A bit weird considering that they're the two returning legacy actors in the film, hey?

After fans noticed that the original film's two leading ladies didn't cross paths at the event, Gellar attempted to speak her piece in an Instagram comment.

"For everyone asking — I never got to see @jenniferlovehewitt, who is fantastic in the movie. I was inside with my kids when the big carpet happened. And unfortunately, JLH didn't come to the after-party," the actress clarified.

"I sadly didn't get pics with most of the cast. But that doesn't change how amazing I think they all are. Unfortunately, some things happen only in real life and not online."

But then things took a turn when Hewitt gave a new interview and addressed their rumoured decades-long feud.

"I honestly don't even know what that was or how that all came to be. I just think people don't want the narrative to be easy. Why do we always have to be against each other and out for each other?" she told Vulture.

However, it was the next quote that seemingly confirmed that all is not well between the former co-stars.

"I haven't seen Sarah. Literally, we've not talked since I saw her at 18 years old when the first movie came out. That's why it's so funny to me. People were like, 'Say something back.' And I'm like, 'What am I going to say? I've not seen her.'"

Okay, this is a bit weird.

Firstly, you'd expect that the two stars would have crossed paths at events in the three decades since they first met in 1997 — especially during the period that they were both two of the biggest actresses in Hollywood.

Secondly, (spoiler alert) Gellar made a cameo in the 2025 reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer, and she was staying with Freddie in Sydney, Australia while the movie was being filmed.

Interestingly, Daily Mail reported that Hewitt seemingly did not film in Australia when the couple were Down Under, but considering that Freddie and Hewitt share scenes together, they had to have come together at some stage.

Hewitt went on to add in her Vulture chat "On my side, we're good. I have no idea where this is coming from."

But is it really just tabloid hysteria? There is something a bit off. It's almost impossible to find images of them together — they definitely never posed together on any red carpet. As most female friendships go, this one sounds complicated!

This feud dates back to the release of the first film, as a narrative was spread in the tabloids and the fandom that there was tension behind the scenes, with some even alleging that Hewitt had requested that Gellar's character, Helen Shivers, be killed off in the movie.

Last year, Hewitt addressed the online chatter.

"I just heard that there's this whole thing where they think that Sarah and I were fighting or something. There's all these things out there," she told Tommy DiDario's I've Never Said This Before podcast.

"Somebody the other day was like, 'Yeah, I think Julie made sure that she was killed because girl actresses don't like to work with girl actresses.' I was like, 'What are you talking about?'"

Hewitt made it clear that she didn't have that kind of power when she was filming the iconic slasher.

"I was only 18. They certainly weren't taking script notes from me, so what are you saying?"

"All of us were in that experience together, you know, figuring it all out and everything. And I root for her and Freddie. I think it's the cutest thing in the world that they've been married for a hundred years and have kids. It's adorable."

While it's unlikely that Hewitt was ever plotting Gellar's demise on set, there's no denying there's a weird vibe between them.

During a red carpet interview for Dexter: Original Sin, Gellar was asked whether Hewitt would return for the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel.

Her response? "I have nothing to do with that," she said, before leaving the interview.

They might not be enemies, but it's safe to say they're not the best of friends. And that's perfectly okay!
