'This fashion theory explains why I'm utterly obsessed with Jennifer Lawrence's street style.'

You know when you clock someone's outfit and think 'shit, she looks cool'?

That's how I feel whenever I see Jennifer Lawrence lately.

Whether it's front row at Paris Fashion Week, or walking the streets of New York, the Hunger Games and Die My Love actor always looks effortless, chic and undeniably cool.

I'm utterly obsessed with her style, and until just now, I couldn't put my finger on exactly why.

Watch: Two fashion experts share where they find outfit inspo. Post continues below.

Take this Jennifer Lawrence street style look from 2023 that altered my brain chemistry.

No prints. No colour. Just great hair and an outfit consisting of basic items — even if they are from the Olsen twins' 'stealth wealth' label The Row.

Or more recently, this Jennifer Lawrence Paris Fashion Week fit.

There's no one I want to be more than JLaw at Dior's Spring/Summer 2026 show, wearing a white tank top, bootcut jeans and the longline coat with fur-trimmed cuffs from Jonathon Anderson's Dior Men's Fall 2026 show.

Then, JLaw explained the fashion theory she lives by to comedian Amy Poehler on the Good Hang podcast, and it started to make sense.

"Do you know what else is really important to remember? Big goes with big," she said.

"Or if you're gonna have a baggy and a tight, you cannot ever have tight on the bottom and baggy on the top… you look like a lamp."

All of this kind of blew my mind because there are two style rules millennials like myself grew up hearing, and this follows neither.

The first? Always tuck in your shirt or top to define your waist (remember when Tan France told us about the French tuck rule on Queer Eye?).

The second? Never wear a baggy top with baggy bottoms so as not to swamp your shape.

One might guess JLaw never heard these words from her stylist, Jamie Mizrahi. A quick scroll through Jamie's Instagram feed confirms she leans on the same loose-fit aesthetic with other high-profile clients like Riley Keough, Jeremy Allen White and Pedro Pascal.

As a five-foot-three, size 12 to 16 woman, my next thought was, well of course you can break style rules and look cool while doing it when you're a five-foot-seven multi-millionaire like JLaw and co.

But then I started noticing many of my favourite fashion creators of different sizes and ages have stopped tucking in their tops, too.

They're pairing straight-leg jeans and baggier denim with oversized shirts and voluminous blouses, and resisting the urge to tuck their T-shirts into their midi skirts.

So, I've been trying to adopt JLaw's big with big fashion theory into my everyday style.

Even when every fibre of my being wants to cinch that waist, I'm letting my clothes hang.

I'm choosing cropped T-shirts to avoid the French tuck.

The jury on whether I look effortlessly cool is still out, but I think I'm feeling it.
