The jellyfish haircut is everywhere, but would you be brave enough to do it?

We all know that getting a fresh haircut can make you feel and look like a completely different person. And if there was a moment in history to prove this, it was at the recent 67th Annual Grammy Awards.

While we saw a range of looks on the red carpet, from Italian bobs to new dyes and fringes, one particular hairstyle made a lasting impression.

Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish and Miley Cyrus — three of the biggest names in the music industry — stepped out sporting a, ahem, peculiar head of hair in the form of a… jellyfish. Yes, the sea creature.

Here's Lady Gaga wearing the hairstyle…

It's not the first time this haircut has been in the spotlight, either. Even Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington and Zendaya have all sported the style.

Here's everything you need to know about the cool-girl jellyfish haircut and how you can embrace it at your next salon appointment… if you're brave enough.

What is the jellyfish haircut?

Originating from Japan, the jellyfish haircut features two distinct layers.

The first, outer layer, is a full-body top half that's cut short and blunt, right around the middle of the ear to resemble the rounded head of a jellyfish. The second, inner layer, is left as long or short as you want, sometimes with textures, to mirror the sea creature's tentacles.

It's kind of a two-in-one deal since you're getting a blunt bob on top of a mullet… interesting, right?

As with most statement-making looks comes a wave of controversial opinions, with plenty of people on TikTok divided on whether it's a no-go or cool style.

The best jellyfish haircut inspiration.

While the trio on the Grammy's red carpet made it look doable, it's a cut that definitely takes a lot of courage for the ordinary person, like me, to even consider trying out.

But after doing a complete deep dive into this hair trend on social media, I realised there are ways you can actually downplay the boldness of it so it's more wearable and, well, flattering.

Whether you go for an all-out jellyfish cut with ridged edges or blend out the layers into more of a mullet style, this look can be a great option for anyone who wants to experiment with a more playful chop.

Here's some inspiration for more subtle jellyfish cuts if you're considering tapping into this trend at your next appointment.
