When James Van Der Beek received a devastating diagnosis, he got a special call.

We all love hearing about celebrity reunions. Especially reunions with actors from our favourite TV shows that we go back to watch over and over again. However, occasionally, those reunions can be bittersweet.

This is exactly what happened to actor James Van Der Beek when he received a colorectal cancer diagnosis.

Van Der Beek rose to fame in the late '90s and early 2000s as every millennial teenage girl's favourite character Dawson Leery on the teen drama series Dawson's Creek.

Late last year, we found out that he has been quietly battling cancer and more recently, has been receiving support from his former castmates.

Joshua Jackson, who played Pacey Witter on the show, recently revealed on Jesse Tyler Ferguson's podcast "Dinner's on Me" that the cast, which also consists of Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams and Busy Philipps, has reunited to help their former co-star through his health journey.

"James is going through something really, truly terrible right now… And, I wish I could take credit for this, but I was kind of the absentee partner here, but the girls all got together and were like, 'We need to do something to help this guy out.'"

Although he didn't disclose exactly what the cast did to support Van Der Beek, it's clear the Dawson's Creek family has rallied around Van Der Beek during this difficult time.

If you were a teenager in the late '90s or early 2000s, Dawson's Creek was likely the centre of your universe. The show, which ran from 1998 to 2003, followed besties Dawson and Joey in the fictional coastal town of Capeside, Massachusetts, as they navigated their friendship and… growing pains.

The series is now considered a cult classic amongst millennials who grew up watching these characters evolve from angsty teens to (slightly less angsty) young adults.

According to Jackson, the cast hadn't necessarily maintained close contact over the years since the show ended in 2003.

"The frequency with which the cast speaks can ebb and flow… It's not a daily call… sometimes it's not a weekly or monthly or even a half-yearly call." However, he emphasised that when they're together, it's like no time has passed.

The bond formed during those formative years filming Dawson's Creek which created connections that could withstand long periods of silence. As Jackson put it, "There is, you know, these major moments in life [that], other than your husband, there's probably no other people in your life that you are that forged to."

Van Der Beek revealed last November that he had been diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer after experiencing changes in his bowel movements. The diagnosis came as a complete shock when he visited a gastroenterologist.

"The gastroenterologist said, in his most pleasant bedside manner, 'It is cancer.' And I think I went into shock," Van Der Beek told People in an interview.

"I really didn't feel like this was going to end me. I really felt like this is going to be the biggest life redirect… I'm going to make changes that I never would have made otherwise."

Van Der Beek has been vocal about his intention to raise awareness. "I've found it helpful and cathartic to share things publicly because I found a lot of support… But almost more than that, I really wanted to raise awareness."

Throughout his treatment, he's credited his wife Kimberly Van Der Beek and their six children as his greatest support system, saying, "I don't get through this without her."

Van Der Beek himself confirmed this reunion during an appearance on Jana Kramer's "Whine Down" podcast last month, saying that his former castmates had been in touch with him.

Earlier this month, Michelle Williams also spoke about their renewed connection, telling Entertainment Tonight "We're in contact, and he's in our hearts and our minds, and he knows that… And we're here for him in every way."
