This week, a 45-year-old living in Ivanhoe East, Melbourne, shows us around her home.

Welcome to Lauren Li's gorgeous mid-century modern rental in Ivanhoe East. From the moment she stepped foot inside during her initial viewing, Lauren knew it was true love. With lots of built-in bookshelves and incredible views, Lauren has never felt more at home — so much so, she believes the house chose her.

Name: Lauren.

Age: 45.

Job: Interior designer.

Location: Ivanhoe East, about 10km north-east from Melbourne's Central Business District.

Rent: $3,910 per month.

What does your rent get you?

I live with my husband and three kids in a three-bedroom two-storey home with a granny flat. We've been here for three years.

Built in 1961, the home has mostly original mid-century modern architecture. I am so connected to it; we absolutely love living here.

We are in love with this house, and my soul is connected to it. Of course, we would like to pay less, but it's fair.

I'd love to share that renters actually care a lot about the homes they live in. Also, it's important to make the home your own and decorate it lovingly.

What do you love about your home?

I love how it feels. The floor plan is ideal for a family as there is a generous living room with a fireplace and enough space for us all, yet we feel connected.

We also work from home, and there is a lovely view of the trees.

Victoria's first female Supreme Court judge, the Honourable Rosemary Balmford, lived here with her family since 1963, so there are good vibes and lots of built-in bookshelves — thanks, Rosemary.

She was also the first female lecturer in the law faculty of the University of Melbourne!

She passed away, and then the house was sold. We feel grateful every day for this house.

Our 12-year-old daughter has her own room with an incredible view over the Yarra River, and our 11-year-old daughter and three-year-old son share the other room.

The kitchen is all original 1960s, and we love its charm.

There is an elevated deck that has held many family gatherings and summer dinners. It's so wonderful.

I could go on for days on how much we love this house!

Why did you choose your home?

This house chose me!

A series of events led us to this house. When our previous apartment was to be sold by the landlord, we needed to find a new home.

I reached out to a clever friend, and she connected us to a real estate agent. From the moment I saw it, I knew I would do anything to live here.

Do you plan on staying long-term?

I'm never going to leave.
