Isla Bell's family never stopped looking for her. Now they're finally getting answers.

Warning: This story contains graphic details of violence.

Nineteen-year-old Isla Bell was last seen leaving her home in Brunswick, Melbourne, around 6pm on October 4, just days before her 20th birthday.

Loved ones say October 7 was the last time anyone heard from her.

For the past six-and-a-half weeks, Isla's devastated family have been out tirelessly searching the city, posting fliers and sharing desperate pleas on social media to find their "care bear".

Now, police believe they know what happened in her heartbreaking final hours, and two men have been charged over her death.

On Wednesday, detectives charged two men after finding human remains in their investigation into Isla's suspicious disappearance. The remains are yet to be formally identified but are believed to be the missing young woman.

Detectives searched two properties in Bentleigh East and Mulgrave and arrested three men.

Marat Ganiev, a 53-year-old St Kilda man, has been charged with murder, while Eyal Yaffe, 57, from Hampton, has been charged with assisting murder, police said.

A 63-year-old Mulgrave man was released pending further enquiries.

What happened to Isla Bell?

The final hours of missing teen Isla Bell's life have been captured on CCTV from the Melbourne apartment building of her alleged killer, according to court documents.

Ganiev's building was surrounded by a CCTV system that covered the front door and window of the apartment, according to a Victoria Police summary.

Police say Isla was seen entering the apartment for the last time on October 5 and was never seen to leave again. On October 7, police saw something on the CCTV through the window.

"What appears to be a fight can be seen through a gap in the front kitchen window of Ganiev's apartment," the summary says. "Investigators observed what appears to be Bell's head whipping around as if she has been struck.

"She falls to the ground and Ganiev can then be seen striking her on the ground of the kitchen.

"What appears to be Bell's head can be seen rising up before being pushed back down by Ganiev's arm."

Isla was captured on CCTV through the same window up until 2am on October 7.

During the next few days, Ganiev is shown allegedly cleaning the apartment.

A fridge wrapped in clear plastic and black tape was allegedly moved from the apartment in a trailer attached to a RAV4 by the two men and taken to Caulfield South where it stayed until October 22. Police allege the fridge was used to store Isla's body.

A neighbour reported the fridge to police because it was attracting flies and had a "foul smell".

The trailer carrying the fridge was allegedly moved to a Bentleigh East property before being shifted to Mulgrave days later in a Hino removal van.

A resident discovered Isla's remains on November 18 after he removed the plastic wrapping, the fridge door swung open and a bag fell out.

He believed the bag contained animal remains, and dumped the fridge on a street corner near hard rubbish in Bentleigh.

The man then allegedly placed the bag holding Ms Bell's remains in a residential rubbish bin before later contacting police.

Before Isla was found, a press conference on her disappearance was held.

It took place on October 22, the day Isla would have turned 20, and police said there was "no evidence to suggest any foul play", per the ABC.

Days after she vanished, her mother Justine Spokes made an emotional appeal for information.

"She leaves an impression, she's hard to forget. She has a fighting spirit, sometimes it's loud and sometimes it's soft, always enduring," she wrote on social media.

"We're here for you bub. I love you my care bear."

Her mother was planning to visit the Great Barrier Reef to celebrate Isla's 20th birthday.

"Hey bub, We're looking forward to our reef trip for your birthday coming up. We've been trying to call you to book flights. Let us know your thoughts. We love you my darling," she posted on October 18.

In an update on November 2, she said: "My girl is still missing and dearly missed… Please don't forget her."

Over the past six-and-a-half weeks, Isla's devastated family have been out tirelessly searching the city, sharing fliers and raising awareness on social media.

They counted the days she was gone, begging her to come home and anyone with information to make themselves known to police.

"To say we miss her is an understatement and our hearts ache with each passing day," her family wrote on the "Help us find Isla Bell" Facebook page, one month on from her disappearance.

At 44 days they said, "It's hard not to think the worst given the situation and the concerning circumstances in which she disappeared."

On Wednesday, that same page shared a devastating update.

"Unfortunately, the news is true. Our darling girl Isla was [allegedly] murdered. We don't have much to say other than we are devastated and completely heartbroken," the family said.

Following the discovery of the remains, Isla's mother shared a statement with The Age.

"Cherished forever and suffering no more," she said. "I am so sorry I could not protect you, that your experience of the world was cruel and unsafe. Despite your challenges, you lived bravely, stood up for what was right and remained the kindest human, the gentlest soul.

"May your [alleged] murderer murder no more. With the deepest love and respect, your Mumma."

Her uncle Tom Hope told the publication his niece was a "breath of fresh air" who dreamed of becoming a marine biologist.

"It's terrible and tragic how she died, but it's important that we keep the focus on the fact that she lived, she's loved, she's precious to us, and she's precious to many," he said.

Isla is the 85th Australian woman lost to violence in 2024, according to Sherele Moody's Australian Femicide Watch.
