'I watched Hugh Grant's new horror movie and this one detail floored me.'

Hugh Grant is known for his quirkier roles. Whether he's playing a pirate captain, an Oompa Loompa, or the arch nemesis to a stuffed bear with an unyielding appetite for marmalade, the former rom-com staple loves to keep us guessing.

In his latest role, he's taken on his most twisted character yet: he's playing an absolute creep in the horror movie, Heretic.

Heretic is a chilling horror film by A24 starring Grant as Mr. Reed, a sinister man who lures two Mormon missionaries (played by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) into his home. What begins as a theological discussion turns into a deadly game of survival as the missionaries discover their host's dark and twisted agenda.

This movie is a wild ride. I'd classify it more as a psychological thriller but with horror elements. For the most part, the movie is Grant's Mr. Reed giving theological lectures about the history of religion and questioning the existence of a higher power.

If you've gone in for some gory slasher or spooky shockfest, you'll be disappointed. This is more thinky and less stabby.

The A24 film is a slow burn of a horror movie, but don't worry, it does manage to squeeze in loads of suspense and some terrifying moments at the film's climax.

Some of the twists that come at the end landed a little clumsily, but it's still a thrilling watch, and another solid horror film to add to A24's impressive repertoire.

Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East are both perfectly cast as Mr. Reed's victims, with a special shoutout to East who is the breakout star of this film and a commanding young actress on the rise.

This being said, it is every bit Hugh Grant's film.

This is Grant as you've never seen him before. I don't mean he's any less handsome and charming — in fact, this detail caught me off guard because I was still rather attracted to and endeared by him. He's an absolute creep, but a loveable one.

This played in his favour, as it made the two Mormon girls entering the home of an unknown man all the more believable.

But underneath his allure, there's a sinister glint in his eyes, a menacing tone to his words, and a dominating power to his stature. Gone are the days when Grant was typecast as a bumbling rom-com lead, he is a sensational psychopath. In fact, I'd implore him to only plan villains from now on because he does it with such a unique flair.

The movie won't be for everyone as there are more than a few squeamish moments — one involving a contraceptive implant that I wish I could erase from my memory — but what we can all enjoy is how delightfully deranged Hugh Grant has been throughout the press tour for the horror flick.

When asked by a journalist how he 'snaps out' of the spooky character when he gets home, Hugh replied "It's still very much with me. I killed three people this afternoon. I feel awful about that."

The man is funny!

When appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the British actor ranted about his growing list of 'pet peeves' which include but are not limited to: people who walk slowly, wear backpacks and carry water bottles.

"Why does everybody need a water bottle? Go to the tap!" he seethed. I get it, Hugh.

In a Vanity Fair series, Grant watched scenes from his most beloved movies, starting with the Christmas rom-com Love, Actually, which he admitted didn't make a lot of sense in certain scenes.

In another interview with BBC Radio, the eternal Scrooge said he "truly dreads Christmas music."

In another Vanity Fair rewatch, he moaned about his character in Notting Hill. "I just think: why didn't my character have any balls?" he said, referencing a scene with Julia Robert's character.

"I think he's despicable, really."

In a longer interview with Vanity Fair when Grant was asked to describe his "idea of perfect happiness", he replied "reading about Colin Firth having a critical and box office catastrophe."

Most recently, Grant shared on his favourite trolling avenue, X (Twitter) his response to a former Real Housewives of New York City star and cabaret singer, Luann de Lesseps, claiming they once made out.

"Steady on. I do remember meeting a charming RHNY in a restaurant, but I'd like to stress it was about 15 years ago," he posted. "I don't recall shots or kissing but her memory might be better than mine."

Never change, Hugh Grant. Never change.

Heretic is currently showing in cinemas.
