'As a fashion editor, these are the 7 statement pieces I wear on repeat (and where to shop them).'

I recently wrote about the "show pony and workhorse" styling theory — a concept that has nothing to do with horses and everything to do with what's in your wardrobe.

It essentially suggests that you need a balance of "workhorse" pieces that provide the base of your outfits, and "show pony" items that add flair.

Without one or the other, you're lacking the building blocks for great style.

When I applied the theory to my own closet, I started realising just how applicable it is. Most of the time I dress like this intuitively, starting with simple staples like denim and shirting, and adding a final interesting element through a shoe or statement jacket.

But I also noticed just how many show ponies I've acquired in my years as a fashion editor and avid collector of, well, shiny fashion things.

Speaking about the theory with personal shopper and content creator Fifi Milne, she shared her belief with me that "classics date", while statement items tend to be more timeless.

At first this seemed counterintuitive. Aren't "classic" pieces supposed to last forever? Isn't that why we're all busy investing in our capsule wardrobes?

But here's the sticky truth: styles we consider classic, like trench coats and white t-shirts, still change shape over time.

The more fitted, cropped trench coat silhouette that was popular in 2010 is very different to the oversized styles we're shopping for now.

But the same doesn't apply to those bolder "show pony" pieces. I'm still wearing a colourful embroidered quilted jacket I bought years ago, because it's such a standout design that it literally does feel timeless.

Trend or silhouette-wise, nothing is tying it to now, or five years ago. I bought it only because I liked it, and I'm pretty certain I'll still like it when I'm 50.

I found many examples like this in my wardrobe, from clothes to shoes to outerwear, and I'm sure if you looked in yours you would find a few forever pieces amongst your racks and rows.

Here are six more "show pony" pieces that always spark joy when I'm getting dressed, and where you can find similar buys.

Loud flats.

My beloved Zimmermann sandals were scored at a markdown price from the brand's Sydney outlet, but if I knew how much I'd wear them in the years to come, I would've splurged the full amount.

Because I live in linens and neutral tones most of the time, these provide a fun pop of colour and pattern.

If you're seeking statement flats you'll turn to time and again, try Alias Mae's covetable range of footbed sandals, or invest in a quirky pair from cult Spanish brand Alohas.

Embellished shirt.

This Alemais shirt is one of those special purchases I made with the intent of loving her for decades to come. Every wardrobe needs at least one white shirt, but the effortless glamour of the embellishment makes this one stand apart.

Alemais is the fashion insiders' go-to for show pony pieces. I also love Bohemian Traders for quality styles that make a splash but won't get old fast.

Show ponies can also stand out because of their shape or texture. My faux leather and shearling coat definitely falls in this category; the two-tone design is so eye-catching and elevates the simplest winter look. I can't wait to pull it out again in the cooler months.

You don't have to spend a bucketload on statement outerwear — try ASOS for countless affordable options (those Brits know their way around a fancy coat!)

Bright green floral dress.

The midi tea dress silhouette is one I know suits me and I feel confident in. I love the combination of a fairly modest cut with an unexpectedly vibrant colour — I snapped up this Forever New dress on sale three years ago, and still turn to it often.

Two brands I like browsing for standout dresses are Sheike (see: this beauty) and Sabo. Their designs offer a point of difference, without feeling intimidating.

Statement sunglasses.

These Quay sunnies came into my life many years ago and they've been transforming my daily outfits since. I opt for my more neutral pairs when I want to go for a minimal look, but thanks to their cat-eye shape and pink hue, these are the ones that get the most compliments.

If you're in the market for some bold sunnies with a similar vibe, I love this style from Poppy Lissiman.

This was a real wildcard purchase from Vrg Grl — the print was love at first sight.

I remember wearing it to a fashion event in 2022 and getting so many comments, and I wore it to drinks with my girlfriends last month. It's a failsafe outfit for me; the bandana motif truly never gets old.

UK brand Never Fully Dressed has the coolest collection of effortless prints you won't see everywhere else, like this oversized shirt. They also have inclusive sizing and a dedicated Petites range.
