I recently wrote about the "show pony and workhorse" styling theory — a concept that has nothing to do with horses and everything to do with what's in your wardrobe.
It essentially suggests that you need a balance of "workhorse" pieces that provide the base of your outfits, and "show pony" items that add flair.
Without one or the other, you're lacking the building blocks for great style.
When I applied the theory to my own closet, I started realising just how applicable it is. Most of the time I dress like this intuitively, starting with simple staples like denim and shirting, and adding a final interesting element through a shoe or statement jacket.
But I also noticed just how many show ponies I've acquired in my years as a fashion editor and avid collector of, well, shiny fashion things.

Speaking about the theory with personal shopper and content creator Fifi Milne, she shared her belief with me that "classics date", while statement items tend to be more timeless.
