'I've found a hack to get grease stains out of clothing that actually works.'

There is nothing worse than getting a grease stain on your clothes while out to dinner, knowing that by the time you get home, it'll have set in already.

Or worse, you don't notice the stain until after your clothes come out of the wash — meaning it's a lost cause.

Truly, this is a dilemma that has left me in tears more than once in my life.

Between cooking at home (often without an apron, because who actually wears an apron these days??), the oils I use in my haircare and skin routine, and the greasy nature of makeup or spilled lipglosses/balms, I have lost too many loyal and beloved shirts, dresses and skirts to the dreaded grease stain.

Regular soap and stain removers do nothing to get them out, and the discolouration is obvious from a mile away.

But it turns out that getting grease stains out — even ones that have been set in for literal months — is not only possible, but easy, thanks to this one clever cleaning hack I discovered.

I'm furious I learnt it so late in life, because it could have saved so many clothes that I've had to let go!

All you need is dishwashing liquid (any brand is fine) and baking soda. That is literally it, but the results are magic.

How to get grease stains out of clothes.

To get grease stains out of clothes, cover the stain with a dusting of baking soda (NOT baking powder — they are totally different!).

The baking soda will absorb any excess oil or grease still in your item of clothing. After about five minutes, pour some dishwashing liquid on top — enough to cover the stained area — and then grab an old toothbrush and scrub the soap and soda into the stain until it becomes a paste. You can also just use a wash cloth or cleaning rag (a clean one, obviously).

After that, let it sit for a few hours or overnight, and then pop it in the wash as normal, air dry and voila: the stain will be no more.

Note: you should avoid using a dryer until you know the stain is out, because heat can sometimes set stains and make them harder to remove.

I've found that this hack works best on fresh stains, but I'm not exaggerating when I say I have used this method to remove stains from clothes that are days, weeks, months, even YEARS old.

Sometimes, for older stains, I've had to repeat the soap/soda mix a couple of times between washes, but it is yet to fail me.

I've use this hack on cotton-blend tees, thick hoodies, synthetic satin skirts, acrylic sweaters, linen tops, polyester work pants, you name it — and it has worked on every single item of clothing I've tried it on, no matter the material.

I once accidentally spilt foundation on an acrylic jumper. I tried this hack immediately, but rinsed it under the tap instead of popping it in the washing machine after the soap soak.

I repeated this process around three times, and after the final rinse, I used a laundry bar soap to give it one more quick wash. Within 20 minutes of the spill, the stain was completely gone. It is seriously magic.

Honestly, the dish soap/baking soda combo will destroy grease in most environments, not just on your clothes. It gets that sticky residue off your kitchen cupboards, and I use it on baking trays and greasy plastic containers, too.

If you've got a bag of clothes you're getting rid of, and some have grease stains, give this a try before you let them go. You'd be surprised at how well it works, and it might save your favourite clothes from landfill.
