'I’m a beauty editor and this is what I say when people ask me how I get my hair so shiny.'

There's no way to say this without sounding up myself, so I'll just come out with it.

I get a lot of compliments on how shiny my hair is.

Can I do winged eyeliner? Absolutely not. Will I ever master blow drying using a round brush? To be confirmed.

But glossy, shiny, swishy hair I can do.

Fun fact: I used to review all the new beauty product launches in my previous job at retailer Adore Beauty!

I've picked up a bunch of expert shiny hair hacks and road-tested many a good product for shiny hair over the years.

Before we get into my shiny hair product recommendations, let me tell you about my hair type because if yours isn't similar, what works for me might not work for you.

I have fine hair, but a lot of it. It's naturally wavy and prone to frizz, and I currently wash and blow dry it two to three times a week.

Important detail, I've also never dyed my hair (except for an at-home wash-out burgundy box dye circa 2005).

This definitely has a bit to do with how I keep it looking so shiny, but my virgin hair colour can't take all the credit.

With that out of the way, here are my tried-and-tested shiny hair hacks, starting in the shower…

Amy's best shiny hair products.

I change shampoos and conditioners nearly as often as I change my undies, but there are a few products I'm always repurchasing with my own money.

I've used the cult Christophe Robin scalp scrub as my first shampoo (yes, we shampoo twice!!) for nearly a decade; only problem is the price tag.

Alpha-H Healthy Scalp Exfoliating Treatment is a relatively new product in my rotation, but both scalp products help encourage healthy hair growth by removing follicle-clogging oil, debris and built-up hair product from the scalp.

The protein-based Virtue Recovery Shampoo is a pricey investment (it goes on sale around four times a year, it pays to plan ahead!) but well worth it if you have lifeless hair.

A little goes a long way — shampoo always lathers up better the second time around, so you'll only need a five-cent-sized amount.

Another shiny hair tip? Pigment-depositing hair masks or gloss treatments.

Unlike at-home hair colour or wash-out hair dyes that last for five to seven washes, these nourishing hair masks deposit just enough pigment in your chosen shade to give you the look of someone who's just had her hair done.

A hairdresser got me onto the Christophe Robin Shade Variation Care in Chic Copper 250; it's the best I've tried.

But if you can only buy one of my shiny hair recs, make it the Kérastase Ultime Elixir Hair Oil OR NAK's ORI Lab Gloss Serum.

Both are formulated with skincare-eqsue ingredients; the former doubles as your heat protectant, too.

Crucially, I apply a generous squirt of hair oil/serum both before wrapping my hair in a hair towel wrap (which I often leave on for hours!) and before blow drying using my Dyson Supersonic hairdryer with the concentrator nozzle.

Now for the tools. Specifically, two hairbrushes.

I did not brush my hair for a decade. Why? Because it only ever left it fluffy, frizzy and looking like an old broom.

Turns out, I was using the wrong type of hair brush for my hair type. Duh.

Rather than boar bristle hair brushes, I've found detangling paddle brushes with metal or plastic round-tip pin bristles reduce frizz and add shine.

You'll find budget and more expensive paddle brushes on the market — I've been using (and cleaning!) my Dyson Paddle Brush for over five years.

Most hair straighteners, curling wands and hot air brushes are made with ceramic plates to add shine while styling, but my most recommended tool is the ghd Glide hot brush.

I've been talking about this hot brush since 2019 and the proof is in Mamamia's beauty article archives!

There are plenty of budget-friendly alternatives (see above!), but I've honestly used my ghd hair tool minimum twice weekly since I got it around seven years ago.

Even after years of use, the straightening brush's ceramic heated bristles and ioniser still smooth frizz and add shine. It's faster to use than a straightener, plus it gives you more of a blow wave over a 'stick straight' look.

Finally — and this last tip is contentious amongst professionals — but I swear by rinsing my hair with cold water.

Considering our hair is actually dead once it grows past the scalp, there's no solid scientific data that proves cold water can affect your hair quality...

Maybe it's a placebo, maybe it's genius, but I reckon my hair looks shinier when I finish my wash with a cold water rinse.

Some trichologists and hair stylists think this is because the cold temperature helps to close hair cuticles (think of them like tiles on a roof). When your hair cuticles are laying down nice and flat, the result is smooth, sleek hair.

Do with that info what you will.
