'I'm obsessed with building my kids a capsule wardrobe, and I swear by this 6-step method.'

One minute you're strutting through boutiques, shopping bags swinging like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. The next, you're in a shopping centre wearing comfort shoes, pushing a pram with a nappy bag slung over your shoulder. Glamorous? Not exactly.

But hear me out — shopping can be fun again. With the right mindset, you'll start pulling together outfits that hit all the marks: coordination, colour, comfort and cuteness. The trick? Just channel your styling skills into building a capsule wardrobe for your little ones.

And yes, there's an ulterior motive. Capsule wardrobes aren't just on trend — they're seriously smart.

Less clutter in the kids' rooms, more savings by only buying what they actually need and a lighter mental load when those busy mornings roll around.

Luckily, everything I need to make this magic happen is at Target. It's my go-to for kids' clothes — super affordable, actually practical and they've got everything you need in one place.

So, now that you know where to shop, here's your six-step guide to creating a capsule wardrobe for your kids.

Step 1: Singlets for an everyday layer.

Every good wardrobe starts with a humble singlet — it's like a warm hug for their little torso. It's the perfect first layer: snug, seamless and offering just the right amount of cosy when the weather can't make up its mind.

And don't worry, it won't mess with the vibe of the overall outfit on top. It's your secret weapon for when they inevitably fling off their jumper before lunchtime. You'll need about three to four of these kids' singlets to kick-start their capsule closet. Think: black, white, grey and then pick a statement colour.

Step 2: Long sleeve tops that go with everything.

The trickiest part here will be picking between plain or printed. These basic long sleeve tops are capsule closet staples that will get the kids through all kinds of days and are the perfect base for a look that feels both put-together and practical.

Once you stock up on a few essentials, getting them dressed each day becomes so much easier. Pick two or three go-to faves or opt for the convenient kid's multipacks — and watch the chaos disappear.

Step 3: Bottoms that are comfy and cute.

Having a smaller wardrobe to choose from means less time choosing what to wear (parents of little fashionistas, you hearing me?), so find some kids' bottoms that can be worn all season and with a variety of tops.

Jeans are a great buy because they are hard-wearing and go with anything. Trackpants are also a necessity for kids, regardless of age. A clever idea for bottoms is to look for an elastic or adjustable waist for comfort, details like cargo pockets, cuffs or flares for girls to add interest and a leg profile to suit their shape.

Step 4: Knitwear that's warm and practical.

Textured knitwear is perfect for layering on cool-weather days — and choosing something colourful can add a little joy to those grey, gloomy mornings. Let the kids help pick a style they love and chances are it'll be the one they reach for on repeat.

V-necks or button details are great for letting a pop of colour peek through, but let's be honest — it's the fluffy knits that bring the most fun. To keep it simple, stick to two solid basics and two with a playful print, pattern or fun texture.

Step 5: Jackets and coats they'll actually want to wear.

Whether it's soft, snuggly fleece for lounging and adventuring or a parka, trench or puffer for that ultimate winter warmth, a good kid's coat or jacket is a must. And if you choose wisely, you might only need to buy one every second year.

Having two or three cosy faves makes getting out the door so much easier — pick one that's for comfort when the kids are itching to head outside and another for nice dinners or events.

Step 6: Shoes for casual and dressy occasions.

As for kids' shoes, opt for runners that easily match most outfits and still let the kids be their busiest little selves. Street sneakers not only look great with everything but also keep things comfy and on-trend — making them super versatile.

This season, clogs, dainty flats and gusseted boots add a fresh twist to wardrobe basics, giving outfits a bit of personality. And don't forget dress shoes — always handy for special occasions. Slip-ons are another winner, helping kids get ready quickly and independently.

When the pieces you buy are easily interchangeable, a kid's capsule wardrobe becomes the game-changing hack you didn't know you needed.

Still not convinced? I wish I could show you the difference it's made to my laundry pile-up — no more feeling overwhelmed by endless washing and everything's a breeze to put away.
