A definitive ranking of hot cross buns, from bloody delicious to just... no.

 Hot cross buns are the second most exciting thing about Easter (obviously the easter eggs come first).

And there is a reason for that: they are seriously delicious. Fluffy bread with bits inside is a fantastic combo, no one’s arguing with that.

But which bits inside are best?

We reached out to followers of our Mamamia Instagram page and asked the important question, which hot cross bun rules supreme? Chocolate, traditional fruit or fruitless?

Fair warning: there is only one right answer.

3. Fruitless.

Sorry but honestly, who buys a fruitless hot cross bun? Isn't that just a bread roll with a cross on top? It's plain and unbelievably boring. Pass.

(Ok, we'll forgive you if you put some sort of spread inside but still... it comes in last place.)

2. Chocolate.

You can't deny that chocolate hot cross buns are seriously yum. If you combine white bread with chocolate, of course, the results will be delicious.

But it just doesn't compare to the winner. Sorry.

1. Traditional fruit.

And in first place: the traditional fruit hot cross bun.

Why? It ticks all the right boxes. It's a little sweet, but not too much. And you can't deny that usually, classic is best.

Ideally, you want your bun lightly toasted with a thin layer of butter.

And to prove this order is the correct ranking, here are the results from our Instagram poll.
